Episode 40: Making Boring Chores Fun
________________________________________________________________
The laundromat has always been a place fit for purpose, and not much else. For many, the trip to this location was considered nothing more than a chore.
But some businesses have converted this somewhat dreary and tedious experience into something exciting and fresh, by adding cafes and in some cases a full restaurant and bar. Casper Mattresses and Dental Spas in New York are other examples of businesses looking to change an otherwise dreary experience into something fun and exciting.
In this episode, Kiran and Tom discuss how the concept of businesses converting an otherwise bad or predictable user experience into something exciting and unexpected could yield impressive results.

Tom is now an official author! His book, titled ‘Digital Labor: The Coming Demise of the White Collar Worker’ is now available on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Labor-Coming-Demise-Collar-ebook/dp/B07Y5Q341S).
Modern media, driven by click-bait headlines to grab people’s attention, has undoubtably shortened people’s attention span.
The process of completing the book brought up the question, ‘Do people even read books?’, and if they don’t - how do you format media surrounding your book to make the content digestible.

Americans are retiring at an increasing pace. Recent research from Deutsche Bank estimates the number of Americans retiring daily has nearly doubled since the year 2000.
Currently, roughly 10,000 people turn 65 each day, the standard age for retirement, and according to Census forecasts that number is set to rise. It will reach nearly 12,000 people within the next 10 years. By 2030, according to the Census Bureau, all baby boomers will be older than 65.
But as life expectancy and quality of life at an older age increases, will the retirement experience be redesigned? What will the future of retirement look like from an experience perspective?
If technology could make visiting your grandmother remotely much easier, would you still do it?!

Investing in self-development has gained serious traction over the past decade, with the market being valued at $10bn in the US alone. A shifting demographic to more tech-savvy consumers has resulted in more personal development content being consumed through digital channels, including popular apps like Headspace and Calm.
However, week and weekend-long retreats can offer people a great experience, to truly disconnect from their hectic schedules and digital devices to focus on understanding and develop themselves in a way digital just can't match.
In this episode, Kiran summarizes a recent weekend trip she took to the Hoffman Institute in California. The Hoffman Process helps people become conscious of and disconnected from negative patterns of thought and behaviors on an emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual level in order to make significant positive changes in their life.

Have you ever organically received a shoutout from one of your celebrity idols? It's a pretty cool feeling if you have. The creators behind the app 'Cameo' believe in the value derived from shoutouts, and has created a platform to inorganically replicate the celebrity shoutout. Essentially, for a fee, you can ask a celebrity to give you a shoutout!
Want Brett Favre to give you a video shoutout? That will be $500...Snoop Dogg? That will set you back $3,000! It seems a lot of people are willing to pay for this short-term experience, and the platform is growing rapidly. In fact, in July 2019 the company raised $50M, fulfilling an average of 2,000 video requests per day, with the top earners making well over 6-figures.

So what can this tell us about the rise of the shoutout culture, and also the rise of influencers as celebrities receiving micropayments for micro-commercials or endorsements/shoutouts?

The idea of watching other people living their lives is not new. The explosion of reality shows through the medium of television is perhaps the most obvious example, but more recently social media has made digital voyeurism accessible and therefore even more prevalent.
Alan Watts, a British-American philosopher who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy for a Western audience, described this idea of technology isolating people over 50 years ago in his talk titled 'Awakenings'.
Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9miTS53auUk&t=429s
In fact, there is a whole range of new-age businesses who are purposefully engineering their products to get you hooked, as described by Nir Eyal in his book 'Hooked' (https://www.amazon.com/Hooked-How-Build-Habit-Forming-Products/dp/1591847788).
Is the rise of digital voyeurism a harmless addiction or does it have far more severe consequences for our society as a whole?

Technological advancements in video productions are starting to have a profound impact on experiences. But recombinant innovation, that is where you take multiple technologies and combine them to create something entirely new, is where the real magic lies.
Imagine, for example, recording your grandmother today and combining that with the latest in video production to forever archive a sound and visual representation of her once she has passed. Or even the idea of speaking with a historical figure.
The truth is, the technology is not that far away from this point in a very real way.
So when the real and fake world conflate, there are some critical questions to debate on how far we will let this go in society? Will these technologies start to affect people's pathology and even lead our society to isolation? What's the point in stepping out into the real world when the fake world is so much better?

In 1998, an article was posted in the Harvard Business Review titled 'Welcome to the Experience Economy', introducing the concept for the first time as an economic evolution from the Agrarian, Industrial, Service, and now Experience economy (https://hbr.org/1998/07/welcome-to-th...).
But what is the Experience Economy, and how can businesses position themselves to take advantage of this next phase?
