A celebration of music and poetry
At our service today, Sunday, March 28th, John, with musical (guitar) accompaniment from Grant explores and celebrates the contribution of poetry and music to our spiritual well-being through poems selected from the works of William Wordsworth, Emily Dickinson and Dorothea McKellar. The guitar accompaniment begins with the melodies of two of our favourite Unitarian hymns that  - owing to Covid-19 restrictions  - needed to remain unsung. These were followed by music composed and played by Grant. Listen on!

Searching for Soul
On Sunday 21st March, Jennie - our President, took us on a very human journey in search of "Soul". She commenced it with a definition: "Soul-searching is an honest evaluation of your feelings and motives - e.g. when we take the time to meditate or to think about our purpose in life and what's important to us in our lives". As we all spend some time "soul searching", this is an insightful journey - not to be missed. Listen on!

The Ego and the Soul
Our service today, Sunday, 14th March 2021 was conducted by Kris Hanna from the Multi-Faith Association of South Australia. In his first address to our Unitarian community called "The Ego and the Soul", Kris recalls an inscription outside the Epworth Building in Adelaide: "I shall pass this way - but once. Any good that I can do - or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it - for I shall not pass this way again."Today, Kris explores how the Self - Ego and Bombast - are so often impediments to our finding and treading a more compassionate and spiritual pathway in our lives. He begins his exploration with a reading from the (non-canonical) Book of Thomas in which many of the apocryphal sayings of Jesus are recorded. Listen on!

Artefacts of Truth: The Holy Grail
Today's service, held on Sunday, 28th February 2021 is led by Aaron Poeze, a member of our Adelaide church. In an address called "Artefacts of Truth - The Holy Grail", Aaron maintains that it is the journey undertaken with faith, courage, perseverence and conviction in search of our "Holy Grails" that is more significant in defining our lives than the ultimate and unlikely goal of achieving them. The Worth of Community in the 21st Century
Today's service, held in our Adelaide Church on Sunday, 21st February 2021 is led by our vice-President, John Hall. It marks a milestone for our Unitarian community. David, one of our young members - in this, his first address, examines the Worth of communities, both Virtual (social media-based) and Real. David identifies with Gen "Z" or "Zoomers" - whose 'omnipotent being' - by his own admission - is more "Google" than God. He compares the sense of community and belonging to be found within communities - real and virtual. Listen on for David's insights and perspectives that may not yet have occurred to those of us who are a generation-or-three removed from Gen Z! Communities of Worth - are compassionate ones!

Shady Grove and the Seventh Principle
Today, John Eaton illustrates the benefits to biodiversity following the 'cool burn' of the E. obliqua bushland at Shady Grove in April 2020 and relates it to our 7th Principle. In today's reading, The Rev. Forrest Gilmore warns that Unitarian Universalists make a profound mistake if the 7th Principle is limited merely to "an environmental idea". It goes much further than this! It's our way of embracing something greater than ourselves - the interdependent web expressed as the spirit of life, the ground of all being, the oneness of all existence, the community-forming power, the process of life, the creative force, even God!Within the macrocosm of Planet Earth, it is a divided humanity that impedes and frustrates effective action to secure the "Web of Life" sustainably. John briefly explores the psychology of denial, and social bubbles empowered by the social media to explain polarisation and the drift to extremism.Using the microcosm of Shady Grove and the impending decisions regarding the future management of its biodiverse obliqua woodland, the challenge will be to "practice what we preach". The 7th Principle challenges us to understand conflict within and amongst ourselves before striving to reach consensus as a Unitarian Universalist Community. "Divided we fall"!

Why Unitarianism?
In today's address - immediately preceding our AGM, John raises the question: "Why Unitarianism? Why are we here sitting here - in this place, rather than at the local coffee shop?John, in the short time available, mentions the Seven Principles that unite us as Unitarians. He then explores the history of Unitarian thinking down through the ages, the persecution of Unitarian leaders that followed their rejection of Christian Trinitarianism and the strength and support that can be drawn from a Unitarian Community of like minds. Blessings
Today's address by our President, Jennie Dyster is all about blessings  - commencing with the annual blessing of the schoolbags as the children of the Church begin a new school year. Jennie contrasts our Unitarian Kid's Club program with reminiscences about her own childhood Sunday School experiences and reflects briefly on the Beatitudes of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. Unitarians don't talk much about "blessings" and heavenly rewards in the hereafter, preferring to focus more on the expression of gratitude. To offset a growing sense of entitlement - or ingratitude, Jennie mentions the health benefits of keeping a "Gratitude Journal", "Gratitude practice" and a "Gratitude list" - or even an "Ingratitude list" to expose the underlying reasons for our ingratitude and doing something about it. There are no "one size fits all" solutions - so listen on!

Ritual of Departure for a Retiring Minister'
Today's service was the final service of our Minister, Rev. Rob MacPherson after nearly 10 years of service to the Unitarians of South Australia. Today's service included contributions from Rob's Spiritual Director during his ministry at our church - Rev. Nicholas Rundle, the Principal of Pembroke School - Mr Luke Thomson, the Director of the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists, Rev. On Laziness
Our service today, Sunday, 17th January 2021 was conducted by our President, Jennie Dyster. Jennie reflects on traditional attitudes to laziness and gives some biblical, psychological, philosophical, cross-cultural insights and anecdotes into the state of mind and body that we are so often tempted to ascribe to "laziness" and its causes. Jennie questions whether laziness really exists at all. Aren't there better understandings, insights and explanations that are less judgemental and more forgiving and accepting of "laziness" in others and in ourselves? Today's three musical offerings by Brendan are included as they were especially evocative and integral to today's theme. This service is not to be missed so listen on!
