The separation of church and state is a concept in which secular authorities control government, preventing it from becoming influenced by religious authorities. The phrase appears in “Jefferson’s Bible,” a book containing texts of sermons prepared by Thomas Jefferson for the use of the Presbyterian Church. In a July 2, 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptist association, Jefferson outlined his view on how “building a wall of separation between church and State” could be accomplished.
