ENVISIONing Gender Authenticity with Jean Malpas. Jean Malpas is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Licensed Mental Health Counselor, founder of the Gender Family Project, at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in NY. He was born in Belgium. With a radio and TV news editor father; and a social worker mother, in a family where divorce, chronic illness, developmental disabilities, and differences of identities and opinions gave him his earliest and most valuable training in family dynamics and problem-solving. He knew early on that he was gay and, after experiencing gender expression-based bullying in middle and high school, he moved to Brussels to attend college and open his horizons. There He discovered a vibrant academic and professional life and the thrill and beauty of queer communities. With the support of the Belgian American Education Foundation (BAEF) scholarship, he moved to New York City for a postgraduate year of research and study at NYU. What was supposed to be a year abroad turned out to be the beginning of his career and life in the big city.
