I met Phil Cogley 17 years ago. We shared a street corner in front of the Federal building in downtown Columbus in a group protesting the military action in Iraq. This was before he became The Saturday Giant. About 3 years ago we sat down to chat about his latest album he was working on, Bytes/Blues. The album was a long process like these types of things often are. In 2015, Phil ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to get started and dropped a few songs to backers for early access. (These versions of the songs were used in this podcast recording.) Since then, he has been touring and working &#8211; and building the rest of the album. During that time he also performed some epic sets with Queen cover band Mr. Fahrenheit and the Loverboys and Weezer cover band The Pinkertones. Not to mention Phil&#8217;s regular supporting vocals, musical talent and crowdsurfing at the annual Sgt. Peppercorn Beatles Marathon. On March 1st of 2019, Phil and a collection of legendary local musicians held the live release party for Bytes/Blues at Rumba Cafe. The group included Joe Peppercorn, Sean Gardner, Dan Gerken, David Murphy, Casey Cooper and a string trio led by Samantha Schnabel. ″[Initially], I decided to do music alone because if I did it alone, then nobody could take it from me. It eventually became an artistic choice, but that was not the motivation. &#8230; I think if I had had other people around me when I was on tour, I probably would not have become so disconnected and isolated,” Cogley said. “I don’t want to be alone in my room playing these songs 10 times in a row. I want to release it with my friends.” &#8211; Columbus Alive On April 21st this year, I received an email from The Saturday Giant. Phil here of The Saturday Giant. You might have thought I disappeared into the wilderness, or passed on to the spirit realm, or moved to Trinidad &amp; Tobago to while away my days. But no such luck! I’m still alive and kicking. Season 2 begins with a round up of the movement to expose and topple evil and powerful men who have histories of harassing and assaulting people. We talk about Matt Lauer&#8217;s button, Charlie Rose&#8217;s robe, and Garrison Keillor&#8217;s &#8220;prairie home companion.&#8221; Karim and I take a close look at the &#8220;Silence Breakers&#8221; TIME People of the Year. We focus our discussion on explaining how these men are NOT Conscious Leaders. In fact, they are not leaders at all. They come from a long line of men who hide behind their power and practice constant sexual harassment and often sexual violence. This is not a fun topic, but I hope you will find it interesting as we break down the crazy times we are in. We make fun of the ridiculous things these men did and how stupid they are to try and deny the crescendo of accusations. We talk about some other stories you have not heard in the news &#8211; Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Andy Signore of Honest Trailer &amp; Screen Junkies. There are a lot of female voices lifting up the chorus of victims. It is important for us to recognize the power and place for men to also speak out and raise the alarm when we see these abuses. English is probably your first language. For a few generations now, English has been the language of business and science. This means that energetic and promising young minds around the world want to learn English. Karim, our co-founder, speaks English as a second language. He speaks Arabic fluently and probably a few others. Fluency is not asking where el baño is. Karim literally can understand complex engineering concepts in more than one language. Pretty sweet. While at college in Columbus at The Ohio State University, Karim met Daniel Montague. One of our favorite activities in Columbus is sitting across a bar from Travis Owens. Usually it means a fine cocktail crafted by hand with fresh ingredients. Drinks at Curio at Harvest are inspired by the days of the speakeasy, like a white whiskey sour, or the day&#8217;s news, like the &#8220;Bad Hombre&#8221;. (The Bad Hombre, a jab at 45, sounds tasty as hell &#8211; tequila, mezcal, grapefruit liqueur, lime, honey, and bitters &#8211;  topped off with a $2 donation to the ACLU.) Curio has been ranked, objectively of course, as the &#8220;Best Cocktail Bar in the Western Hemisphere.&#8221; Travis spent his college years in Columbus and Florida studying plants and sound engineering &#8211; all while working in the bar business. Judging by his Instagram page, you would assume he studied fine art as well.
