The Good People have been around a long time. A really long time. Think of a long time, then multiply that by a really long time. You’re getting close. If you believe, as I do, that they are an intelligent race, (or group of clans), who have lived these many long ages, it follows their societies must take on some form of structure, some rules, or boundaries. Their society cannot be a complete free for all: if it was their carelessness and recklessness would result in them exposing themselves to us regularly. So it is that, from time to time, (not as often as us of course) the Good People enter into some form of conflict. On this week’s episode we listen to accounts from people who have witnessed the Faerie marching in procession, just as a Human army would, and engaging in battle. There are worlds and creatures unknown to us, lurking in the deep waters of sea, river and lake. In this episode we explore one of the Good Folk who is known to dwell on both land, and in the dark, deep lakes of Ireland: The Water Horse, also known as the Lake Horse. Many of our Ancestors have witnessed a Water Horse lurking far out in the middle of a lake, often silently watching the activities of nearby Humans or stealthily stalking them. Others still have seen Water Horses graze peacefully on grass bordering the Lake. We share a tale of one such Water Horse who did not appreciate being disturbed by nearby fishermen and angrily chasing them before returning its their watery home. Some particularly courageous/reckless/desperate people have even captured a Water Horse and made use of its immense size and strength to help with manual labour tasks. When is a light not just a light? The Good People are masters at evading us. When it suits them, they can be impossibly elusive: appearing as nothing more than a shadow in the corner of our eye, or a feeling, a sense, within us that they are nearby. But what happens when they are so caught up in some activity, that they forget to shield themselves from Human eyes? Halloween: that one night when most anything can happen. Sure, you could chance your luck walking the dark night, among Faeries, Ghosts and Spirits who roam freely and unhindered… or you could tuck up cosy with me and a few friends, as we share Halloween poems and true tales by a crackling fire. Remember, on this night, All Hallows Eve or Sahwain, when the dead and the living mingle, anything can happen. Some Spirits may wish for nothing but to visit loved ones, enjoy a little music and hospitality. Here’s an episode for all of you blessed with a curious mind, but… fair warning, this topic may offer up more questions than answers. To eat or not to eat? Is it safe to eat Faerie Food? The answer is perfectly complicated: yes, and no. That is to say, it depends. There is a long-held belief that if you consume food or drink offered by Faerie, you will be bound to their realm for all times, never to return to your family and friends. How do we know this? Because those who have accepted Faerie hospitality and never returned have warned us!
