Dr. Julissa Ventura is an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership (EDPL). Before coming to Marquette, Dr. Ventura was a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Education and Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research sits at the intersections of Latinx education, critical youth studies, and community-based education. Through critical ethnography and participatory methods, Dr. Ventura’s research sheds light into the different ways in which community-based spaces and practices foster Latinx students’ sense of belonging, academic identities, and critical consciousness. As a community-based researcher, Dr. Ventura prioritizes relationship-building and the knowledges of Latinx communities in her work in order to build equitable and mutually beneficial research partnerships for social justice. Alondra Garcia is currently a 2nd Grade Bilingual Teacher for the Milwaukee Public Schools. Dr. Phitsamay Uy is an Associate Professor of Leadership in Schooling and the Graduate Coordinator for Ed.D Programs. She is also the Co-director of the Center for Asian American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She received her doctorate of education from Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Dr. Uy is a Lao American K-21 educator, a community advocate, and an equity trainer. Her research focuses on the academic achievement of immigrant and refugee students, with a particular interest in Southeast Asian American students. She is also interested in family and community engagement of immigrant and refugee populations. In this episode, we talk with Erika Rosales who is the Director for the Center for DREAMers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Center provides services through a holistic and intersectional approach such as legal, educational, mental & social services, and career resources to the DACA community in Wisconsin through presentations and community outreach as well as support through culturally responsive training. The Center for DREAMers aims to provide legal representation at no cost for DACAmented recipients across Wisconsin.
