Cornelia found her life’s passion for energy at the age of 4 years old, when her curiosity led her to grab a nail and put it inside a socket to see what was inside. Next thing she remembers, she had been thrown backwards by an electric shock, lying in her room with her worried mom next to her. The power of electricity was so fascinating to her that she decided she wanted to become an electrical engineer to understand how energy works. She even ended up finishing a PhD, where her first memory was entering a classroom of 3 women, 800 men and a white lab coated professor telling the women they should go home because they wouldn’t make it. But she did. Cornelia went on to work in several different companies all over Europe including and had a research grant to work in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley. She now works as an electricity regulator, supervising the Swiss Electricity market, while partnering up with a Web 3 university professor to set up panels every 4 months in the metaverse for women learn how to have meetings, set up avatars, and explore this new and exciting era in a safe and curious space - effectively dominating a male-heavy industry. Listen in on all her incredibly bold and beautiful insights on navigating the tech industry especially as a woman, feeling passionate about her subject of choice (energy), and appreciating diversity when the going gets tough. #02 From Musician to Managing a Team of Software Engineers - with Nate Rohweder
In this episode we speak to Nate, the manager of software engineering at Crisis Text Line and my former colleague. Nate’s story is not just inspiring but important for all of you who are doubting that you can get into something as technical as software engineering without a background or education on the topic. Nate started off as an archaeology major and musician in a band. What was at first a passion to grow marketing efforts for his band by learning to build a website became a career in tech that has now led him to manage a team of software engineers. Nate talks about his journey from 0 to 100, and how passion is an incredibly important aspect of growing a career in tech. Nate breaks the stigma of what it looks like to code professionally, because it’s not all about being behind a screen in a dark room. In fact, it’s the opposite. It requires a lot of team effort and human interaction to get things done, especially when you’re doing meaningful work. Come learn from one of the kindest, most interesting people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. The insights are real. Let’s dumb this down.
