Yerp or Yert. Out Of Pocket or For Real For Real. Death and life is in the power of the tongue. The lingo and the language of our people has been scrutinized and judged by other groups and cultures against their “norms”. In this powerful conversation we discuss the nuances in languages, labels, perception, culture and community. Marvin Malone’s compelling TED Talk on Speaking to the Crowd inspired us to dive deeper into how language defines and creates community. And through doing so, the duality of how culture creates language and language creates culture. We’re back! Season 3 kicks off with a healthy conversation about the topic of healing. We’ll be focusing on healing of all types this season. And as our new intro says, it might get a little messy. But the learning, the healing and the beauty lies in the mess. From when to break up with your therapist to our take on Love Is Blind, this episode has a little bit of everything. Deja and Alicia reconnect after a short hiatus to usher in the incredible guests and conversations we’ll be having. The duality of healing is best described by our friends of the pod:“Healing comes in waves, and I'm allowed to feel every rise and every fall of my tide.” ~Alex Elle“Every step we take to heal from the damage that was done to us is an accomplishment.” ~Morgan Harper Nichols “Your healing, and healing, is hard. Sometimes it feels like you’d be better off pretending everything is ok instead of facing your demons.” ~Michell C. Grief, doubt, fear . . . . growth. The life experiences we and our guests have endured are masterclasses in evolution and growth. As we prepare for Season 3, we bring you a Dose Of Growth. We know the only constant is change. And we know the only way to become stronger is on the other side of the breakdown. Hear excerpts from our episodes with Kayla Jeter, Nikki Kimbrough, Matt James and La Shell Wooten and be inspired by their stores of growth and lessons from the other side. Sadness to Joy. Grief to Gratitude. Surviving to thriving. Showcasing this duality of emotions is exactly why we created this podcast. We can hold space for both. Please share this episode with a friend who is currently in their own growth phase. Sending our fam so much love and we can’t wait to kick off Season 3 shortly! Identity. Are we born with it or is it shaped? Does society define it for us or do we define it for ourselves? Join us as we bring you the first Dose Of . . . Episode where we flashback to meaningful conversations we’ve had around one specific topic. This episode centers around identity. From a lover and a storyteller to a boundary-breaking integrator to a queer, Catholic Nigerian to a self-proclaimed anxious, overthinking, autistic black man, we explore it all. Identity within Black culture is layered and we were honored to have these open conversations with our guests about how they perceived and examined their own. “I am an anxious, overthinking, autistic entrepreneur who is a husband and a father.” Mic drop with that statement to close out our second season with vulnerability and uncomfortable truths shared by special guest Michell Clark. This season we went deep into the duality of relationships. Relationships with self, romantic partners, friends, coworkers. We’ve been inspired by Michell’s view of the world and the beautiful words he uses to unite us. But we were even more moved by our incredible conversation. After processing his recent Autism diagnosis (and let’s be honest, still processing), he shares wisdom on parenthood, creativity and boundaries. Michell leaves us with an affirmation he is focused on and that we should all call into our lives . . . “I deserve to be at ease.”Beautiful People! We’re taking a quick break over the next two weeks as we prepare for season 3. We hope you take the time to catch up on any episodes you may have missed. Please be sure to screenshot and share on social media so we can bring others along for the journey! We’ll be back with a couple of compilation episodes and then a juicy Season 3 starting soon.Hosts: Deja Riley @dejariley + Alicia Ferguson @aliciadoes.yogaGuest: Michell Clark @michellcclark www.michellcclark.comPODCAST CREDITS: Executive Produced by Deja Riley + Alicia Ferguson Co-Produced by Liz Van Voorhis Recorded + Edited by WTF Media StudiosAssistant Podcast Management by Alec Bernal + Andrew AbreuTheme Song by Tash x STG x JCabz x Kabeh ENJOYED THE SHOW? From dancing at a fraternity party and being pointed at as the only “approved” person to sing the expletives to having to educate your romantic partner on cultural differences and norms, frankly it’s STILL exhausting being a Black woman in America. Sure we’ve made progress and 2020 shined a light on the micro and macro experiences we’ve endured, but there is still a long way to go. We are thrilled not only to have Brianna Holt join us in conversation but more importantly to give light to her incredible book, In Our Shoes, that makes us feel seen and understood. Part memoir, part cultural critique, In Our Shoes uses pop culture and author Brianna Holt’s own lived experience to dissect the stereotypes and preconceived notions that young Black women must overcome in America today. Excellence. Excellence in Education. Black Excellence. When the phone rings and the President of Morehouse College is on the other end saying you are the best woman for the job, you answer the call. In part 2 of our conversation, Dr. Nina Gilbert discusses how her role as the Director for the Center of Excellence at Morehouse College allows her to not only elevate the careers of Black men, but is helping to increase the percentage of Black educators in this country. Her motivation is clear - elevating, uplifting, inspiring and mentoring our youth will lead to the promise of tomorrow. From not planning on working in education to creating from scratch one of the highest performing schools in the state to leading the Center of Excellence in Education at the best liberal arts college in Georgia, it shows us sometimes your calling is greater than you ever could have imagined for yourself. Thank you Dr. Nina for your service, for sharing your experiences and inspiring us to dream and act bigger.Hosts: Deja Riley @dejariley + Alicia Ferguson @aliciadoes.yogaGuest: Dr. Nina Gilbert @drninalgilbert drninagilbert.comPODCAST CREDITS: Executive Produced by Deja Riley + Alicia Ferguson Co-Produced by Liz Van Voorhis Recorded + Edited by WTF Media StudiosAssistant Podcast Management by Alec Bernal + Andrew AbreuTheme Song by Tash x STG x JCabz x Kabeh ENJOYED THE SHOW? It’s profound to change the life of one person. Even more so to change the lives of several. But today we’ll listen to the story of Dr. Nina Gilbert who has been able to change the lives of many by giving them education, opportunity and promise. And she comes from a long line of educators making impact before her. She did not grow up thinking her path was to follow in the footsteps of her parents. But the passing of the Chief of her family and community inspired her to pivot her career into education. And after both of her sons were told they “weren’t college material” she thought she knew what she needed to do. But it was the story of a fateful incident with two of her students and a school board members reaction that inspired the charter school Nina founded. You’ll have to tune in next week to hear the rest of this inspiring story . . .
