I really appreciate how the podcast features user experience research leaders from all types of organizations. It’s an entertaining and insightful way to quickly understand best practices and trends across the industry. Early in my career, it helped me grow my skills and mindsets regarding applied research. Now, it’s exciting to learn from other leaders who share their approaches to org design and evolving the discipline.

This podcast has been breathing life into my experience as a researcher for years now. So glad Dollars to Donuts is back! I started listening back in 2020 when I wanted to upskill in research, and possibly pivot from content design. Not only is it insightful and interesting content; I have applied what I learned in my day-to-day. My favorite episode is #22 with Vicki Tollemache of Grubhub. She talks about researchers being educators who bring a richer, deeper understanding.

Steve Portigal wrote the definitive book on Interviewing Users. He continues to lead the UX Research community through his fun and educational podcast, Dollars to Donuts. There is no better resource to keep abreast of UX Research trends and strategies than this timely series of interviews with global researchers. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced researcher, you will learn something new from each episode.

Steve Portigal is a favorite of mine when learning and teaching people how to do User research. This takes it a step further; interviewing heads of research departments from Citrix to ADP to Goldman Sachs and on the flip side, Etsy. There’s no “why are we here” here, just great content.

I finally started listening to the Dollars To Donuts podcast this morning. Steve really knows how to interview people - he always has the right follow-up question. The podcast is great for the content and for observing interviewing style. As an agency person it’s great to hear what’s going on in enterprise UX research.

This podcast and the work Steve Portigal is doing is pushing our industry forward! I’m a HUGE fan - and I’m personally grateful for his investment in the research community!

As a former academic researcher who has just transitioned to UX research, Dollars to Donuts is an incredibly valuable find! I can't imagine a better way to learn about how UX research is done than by talking to the people who head up research in some of the most innovative companies out there. There are lots of courses and articles out there on UX research, but Steve's interviews with practitioners give a much-needed focus to how companies are solving real-life problems and taking advantage of the opportunities made possible with high quality research. I eagerly wait for each new episode!

Steve's got a great handle on the craft of interviewing. Good range of guests too, some are more interesting than others. The episodes with Judd Antin and Pree Kolari are incredible.

Full of insights in a field that deserves more credit that it's been receiving lately. As a UX Designer transitioning into UX Research, it has been helpful to hear about the backgrounds, career trajectories, thought processes, and day to day tactical insights from pioneer practioners in the field. A lot of the experiences and thoughts of these researchers resonant with my own thinking, and it's great to hear others who are on a similar wavelength. Definitely a podcast worth subscribing to!

These lively and insightful discussions about user research and its growth within different companies gets me beyond excited about we do for users and products.

As a UX Researcher in the Bay Area, this has been one of the most valuable podcasts I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. There aren't many resources available to see how research works in various companies, it seems like the only way to really do it is befriend the researchers that work there, attend events, etc. Those things are great, but it's really wonderful to have a full hour dedicated to discussing it recorded and available at any time. Looking forward to the next season, I'm so glad that this exists!

This is a great professional development resource for UX Researchers, Designers and Research Managers- with the UX Research field coming into maturity the timing of this is great. Steve Portigal interviews design research leaders from some of the most cutting-edge UX Research teams on philosophies of UX research, how research is structured and fits into the larger organization and how UX research teams have evolved historically. Also provides background on the professional and personal background of some of these leaders.

The caliber of guests matched with the inquisitive, intelligent Steve Portigal makes this hands down the best user research podcast around. If you want to learn from some of the best in the industry, look no further.

If you’re a user researcher, there aren’t any other podcasts (or really any other sources I can think of) that provide this level of insight into what’s going on in the industry. Really nice to listen to something that is focused on research and not a hybrid UX podcast. We need those, too, but there are plenty of resources for that.

I listen to “Dollars to Donuts” on my way to work, and they really make my mornings. The act of listening and hearing the experiences of others in the field (instead of reading about it) is such a different experience and really resonates. One gets two things from these podcasts: learnings from the interviewees, but also the actual technique of interviewing. Portigal interview style is a learning in itself.

Incredible podcast! It's really interesting getting some visibility into how different organizations approach user research and I'm looking forward to more episodes. On top of that, I’ve been able to pick up a few tips and tricks along the way that I can apply to my own work.

Each interview covers a range of topics, from the theoretical to the practical. I especially enjoyed the interview with Carol Rossi and the conversation about "putting good back into the world."

These interviews are well worth the time for anyone interested in: (a) the craft of UX or design research, (b) the growth and development of research groups or professions within an organization, and (c) the culture of research within an organization. As a master ethnographic interviewer, Steve Portigal lets his interviewees steer the conversation into the most fruitful and engaging areas for them to talk about. The result is a fascinating tour through quite diverse organizations and ways of organizing research.

Not only do you get to hear fascinating stories about how research is being integrated into these companies, but you get to hear the master interviewer himself, Steve Portigal, in action!
