DNR #32: The Movies That Inspired George Luacas; The Hidden Fortress and Flash Gordon Reviews; Star Wars: A New Perspective
Week in Review - Zane Recommends:John Hodgman's Jar Jar Head George Lucas Biography -A short history of George Lucas, his rise, influences, and what the episode is about. Flash Gordon (1936) Review -One of Lucas’s famous influences. When he couldn’t get the rights to Flash Gordon, he created Star Wars instead. Star Wars: A New Perspective - Compared to its predecessors, Star Wars was a gritty and mature step forward. But in retrospect maybe it was darker and more diabolical than we realized as kids. The Hidden Fortress Review -Director: Akira Kurosowa, 1958 Indiana Jones: The Lost Adventures - There were many drafts of Indiana Jones adventures that never saw the light of day before we finally got The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. We talk about a few of the scripts that almost were, then talk about the ones we'd write if we were running the show. Flash Gordon (1980)-Director: Mike Hodges, 1980We’ve seen some of Lucas’s influences, now how did he in turn influence the Flash Gordon movie that came out after Star Wars? Is there room for space opera in the modern age, or is the best fit this kind of campy, classic pulp? Week in Review -  Zane Recommends: The Prettiots Witchy   Ben Recommends: Katamari Damacy Commodore: A Company on the Edge Halt and Catch Fire   Dracula Untold: Origin of the Modern Vampire -  1816 is called The Year Without Summer. It was a dark time for many reasons, and in that darkness lie the origins of the modern vampire.    Essential Dracula - Ben opines for for the vampires that influenced him growing up.   Van Helsing Review -  Director: Stephen Sommers, 2004 Abraham Van Helsing an immortal amensiac working for a secret Catholic spy agency travels to Transelvannia to destroy Dracula, the Wolfman, and Frankenstien's monster. It's the story Bram Stoker always meant to tell.   Priest Review - Director: Scott Stewart, 2011 A sci-fi, western, apocalypse, martial arts, cyberpunk, action horror vampire film based loosely on a South Korean comic of the same name. Surely that's a recipe for success. Right? Right??   Homework Assignment - No monster can match the vampire's popularity in popular culture, least of all B-Listers like the Creature From the Black Lagoon or the Mummy. So it's our turn to change that. Time to give the Mummy a makeover.   Contact us at [email protected]   Sound Effects From: http://freesound.org/ Music From: http://freemusicarchive.org/ Heroines, Diablo Swing Orchestra Velvet Embracer, Diablo Swing Orchestra The Demon's Lair, Black Bones Hounds Of Dracula, Waylon Thornton and the Heavy Hands   Music From: http://archive.org Organ Piece, David Clark The Requiem Mass In D Minor
