After dedicating 9 years to a company helping to manage start-ups, today’s disruptor, Paul Ford, found himself being suddenly let go. Ford, the Founder & Managing partner of DS9 Capital, decided it was time to fix what he saw as an issue in the world of insurance. Host of Disruption / Interruption, Karla Jo is joined by fellow disruptor Paul Ford to talk about levelling up insurance and healthcare technology companies through portfolio management.  Takeaways:   The key ingredient to disruption is curiosity. It’s the thing that motivates you and keeps you fresh. It doesn’t make work feel like work, instead it feels like a hobby. Because of the way venture investing in private equity is structured, everyone tends to follow the pack and go down the same road.  Everyone wants to be a millionaire and make a million dollar company, but you need to set realistic goals. Don’t try to be the next Uber, set achievable goals. 80% of the US economy is built on the back of the mom and pop company shops.  Think about your first job as paid training. You will learn all sorts of different things about your field in your first job, don’t expect to be an expert right away. Don’t sit on your wisdom. There might be someone out there who could use your help, and it’s always beneficial to help others.  Education only serves you well if you are curious. Sometimes the best education is on the job rather than spending extra money for more years of school. You know, those close to me, I typically tell them, Hey, I operate in sport mode like this, like I'm already retired and just having fun, doing what I do. That's how it feels every day.
