Jeff Deskovic | Exonoree + Founder The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice
It was an honor to interview today's guest, Jeff Deskovic. He is many things - an advocate, a lawyer, a business owner, a free man, but for 16 years, he was an inmate at a maximum security mens prison. His story is harrowing and humanizes the topic of wrongful convictions. I am astounded at his resilience and blown away by his desire to help other people who find themselves serving unjust sentences. The fact that he made his way through law school and established a foundation is even more impressive when you learn he was convicted at just 16 years old.  Jeff is am extraordinary person doing important work. Please explore the links below and consider ways you can help Jeff in his mission, even if it's only through sharing among your network. Brace yourself for Part 1 of Jeff's story. Part 2 comes out next week, make sure you are subscribed so you don't miss it. Maggie Freleng | Unjust & Unsolved Podcast
Welcome, Maggie Freleng! Maggie has been on my list to interview for a while, and the launch of her new podcast from the Obsessed Network,  Unjust & Unsolved, seemed like the perfect time to do so. Maggie lets us in on her reluctant foray into the true crime world, and how her background in journalism prepared her to advocate for stories she felt needed amplifying.  Our JUSTICE/INJUSTICE conversation heats up as Maggie shares the incredible stories from those inside who are fighting to overturn their convictions. We discuss actual innocence, our sentencing policies, and how we're holding up during quarantine in New York City! The first two episodes of Unjust & Unsolved are out - subscribe and listen wherever you get your podcasts! RESOURCES! Guest suggestion? Want to say hi? David Rudolf+ Sonya Pfeiffer | Abuse of Power Podcast
We are back! Welcome to Season 2 of DIE-ALOGUE: a true crime conversation! We are kicking it off STRONG with power couple, David Rudolf and Sonya Pfeiffer - married attorneys who are now focused entirely on wrongful conviction cases. You will hear all about how their podcast came to be and their impassioned perspectives on the American criminal justice system. You probably know David from his work representing Michael Peterson, and his scene stealing presence in Netflix's The Staircase, but this might be your first introduction to Sonya, an award winning journalist who covered the Peterson trial, and then decided to go to law school. Together, they now practice law  together. Sonya and David are also owners of a contemporary art gallery in Durham, NC, and if you think that isn't relevant, just wait until the end of our conversation! Matthew Horace | Author "The Black and the Blue."
If you are FOR changing what police work in the Unites States looks like, and want to bring equality to our system, but ALSO want to remain supportive of law enforcement, Matthew Horace has ideas. He lays out the ways and reasons all of this is not only possible, but necessary. I can't think of a better interview to close out Season 1 - yes, DIE-ALOGUE is taking a brief hiatus to prepare for a new Season in September, more on that below! First, you need to listen to my conversation with Matthew in which we discuss police reform, BLM, defunding the police, Ferguson, the murders of George Floyd and Rashard Brooks, and more. Then you must go get his book so you can learn even more about law enforcement in our country, from a man who lived it for 30 years, AND his dozens of interview subjects - men and women in blue - all over the country, who also serve and protect.  His book is wonderful and combines his own story about becoming a cop, the racism he experienced in and outside of the department, and interviews with other officers and agencies who share their stories as well. Understanding policing history is critical as we look to make changes for the future. You can find his book here. Learn more about Matthew here. And follow him on social media: FB Instagram Twitter  Note: Putting a link to The Breathe Bill which was just proposed at the time of our interview and is further along now. You can learn about it here. I ( Rebekah) want to say THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. I've put out new episodes 56 weeks in a row and it has been incredible. I am so grateful to you the listeners, and my incredible guests. But Mama needs a break to prepare for Season 2.  I will be re-releasing some oldie but goodie episodes that you may have missed while I am gone! Josh Bloch | Journalist, The Lost Kids Podcast
Recognize this guy? He was my guest on Episode 19, where we explored his amazing work on the CBC podcast, UNCOVER: Escaping NXIVM! That's right, it's Josh Bloch - my first returning guest - this time to discuss his latest work, the UCP Audio podcast, The Lost Kids, which focuses on the troubled teen industry-  and guess what? It has possible roots to a bizarre cult - I am seeing a theme here. Josh is a talented journalist and I love how he thinks and how he reports his findings. If you haven't already, be sure to check out The Lost Kids and let me know what you think. Also, if you want to watch the live event I did with with Tori Telfer ( my 1st guest!) about NXIVM and other cults, you can watch it here. Finally, this is the book that  Josh references that I want to make available as a resource following his podcast. Help At Any Cost by Maia Szalavitz. Looking to support DIE-ALOGUE? Charlotte Lang | FBI Agent, NETFLIX Fear City
When I watched Fear City - the new three part docu-series about the mafia in 1980's New York, I immediately zeroed in on FBI agent Charlotte Lang. I wanted more of her story. And lucky me, I got it! Now retired, Charlotte shares her not so conventional path to the FBI (she answered a newspaper ad after working sales for IMB), and some mob related stories that you won't see on Fear City ( SHE HAD LUNCH NEXT TO FAT TONY AND SPIED ON HIM). Come for the mafia stories, stay to hear what it was like to be one of a handful of Female agents at the bureau.  I think you are going to love her and this doc as much as I did. Christian Barth | True Crime Author
Christian Barth is an author and attorney living in Connecticut, but hails from the lovely Garden State - New Jersey. His most recent book, The Garden State Parkway murders, is about about the unsolved murders of Susan Davis and Elizabeth Perry, which occurred on Memorial Day Weekend, 1969in Ocean City, NJ. Christian recalls his parents discussing this case while driving along the very same highway where their bodies were discovered. His curiosity around the case combined to his deep interest in the American era of the late 1960's inspired him to write this book which ended up being a nine year long journey. You will understand why when you hear our conversation. Among the many suspects in this case, Ted Bundy and Gerald Stano make an appearance, with Bundy's possible involvement being controversial to some. Though not a known serial killer, one suspect ended up being an active member of the Aryan Republican Army, and known white supremacist. This book is so rich in both context and case details, that I hope it wakes the memory of anyone still alive that might have information about the case.  You can find more about Christian and his work here. You can find The Garden State Parkway Murders and his first book, The Origins of Infamy, here.  Learn more about Christian and find him on social via his website. Looking to support DIE-ALOGUE? Cheyna Roth | Investigative Journalist and True Crime author
Cheyna Roth is an investigative journalist and true crime author, but her career began as a lawyer in the prosecutors office. Hear all about what inspired the change, and most importantly, what led to her 1st book ( JUST LAUNCHED YESTERDAY), COLD CASES: A True Crime Collection. Cheyna and I had a great chat about all aspects of true crime, including which victims we care about and why. We spend sometime discussing the Freeway Phantom Killings and why the victims - all young women of color, received far less media coverage than their white victim counterparts. The case remains unsolved and the 6 families have not received closure or justice. As a continuation of the DIE-ALOGUE Summer Reading Series, we are giving away a signed copy of her book to a lucky listener!
