As someone who spent time in this facility and witnessed some truly disturbing things, I'm glad it's finally getting the attention it deserves. I don't think most people realize how detainees are treated by staff, the level of filth people are forced to live in, the size of the roaches and rats, or how sick you become from the food and the brown water. Some staff seemed to take pleasure in provoking reactions so they could justify their own abusive behavior. It's important to remember that not everyone in there is guilty. Most are simply poor and unable to afford bail. From the time you're brought in to the time you finally see a courtroom, it can be years. And when you finally get out, you're handed a bill for thousands of dollars for "room and board." You leave looking and feeling like a shell of yourself from the lack of sunlight, fresh air, and basic human dignity.

This podcast hooked me in the beginning… I thought it was going to peruse the case presented there. A few episodes in and it turns to a podcast on elections and seemingly unrelated issues like the power going out. Felt like there was an interesting case here that was abandoned after it was presented and the last few episodes were dull in comparison.

This was a great podcast! I’m So glad I came upon it. Great narration and just a good story line.

This really could have been covered in one or two episodes…very slow story development and drug out longer than it had to. Narration was ‘meh’. I could tell this was produced by liberal Penn Live!

The solution, don’t break the law and you will not have to go to jail. I know that sounds so simple because it is, but why does it seem so difficult for some? Some people just don’t want to change, they want to stay angry, they want to continue to commit crimes, they want to continue to terrorize neighborhoods without remorse. Why is it the responsibility of Law Enforcement to make sure people behave? Do you have any idea what Correctional Officers have to go through, how combative some of the inmates are. They are not equipped to deal with the amount of mental health issues the inmates come in with. We should be talking about creating more Mental Health Facilities. Unfortunately I don’t think these issues will ever be solved until the individuals themselves decide NOT to commit crimes.

Interesting story, but poor journalism and story telling. Story is told with a high degree of political bias, poor logic and significant presumption. Done right this could have been not only helpful to the PA area but also interesting.

Shocking, inspiring, and for someone who has been a decided non-voter for decades…has made me think…maybe it’s time to join up again. Thank you from a Pennsylvanian gone Texan, for bringing these terrible things out of dark!

The story that is being reported on is incredibly powerful, with a lot of interesting details and incredible characters. The story speaks for itself and I feel like the voice over is very heavy handed, stating time and time again how you should feel, what we should do as a society, etc, when the story and the two key men at the center more than does this for you. It feels like it cheapens the story a bit, like I’m a child being taught ethics. The reporter has had incredible tenacity, and I’m so glad that this is being brought to light, I just wish they would let the story shine a bit more.

This is a valuable topic that needs to be addressed in every state. Our nation needs to focus on mental health, drugs/and alcohol, and above all else to teach our youth to be leaders not followers. This is just my opinion. I would like my taxes to fix the above items, but I would like to implement classes for all incarcerated individuals. I think if we can advance them in a topic or skill this may deter some inmates from infighting and/or help create better leaders in our communities. These individuals are first and foremost humans who should be given care and respect. With guidance and a skill they return to society a better person.

I lived in Harrisburg for more than 10 years and never knew this was all going on. I am thankful to the podcast team and the individual reporters for getting this information out there!

Couldn’t even get through a single episode due to the stilted cadence and robotic tone of the host. I understand that he was the investigative reporter that worked on this story, but he absolutely should not have been the voice of this series. What a bizarre choice by Wondery to green light this decision.

Great reporting and wonderful storytelling, but the host talks annoyingly slow. I feel like I'm being talked to like I'm slow or something. Had to listen at higher speed.

It’s a good podcast but you lose credibility when you can’t get basic facts right like calling it Paxton Rd for the billboard when anyone who lives here knows it’s Paxton Street.

I cannot believe this Grant guy is STILL the coroner in York County, Pa. I'm thoroughly disgusted with the corruption & cover ups that go on (and on and on). Sad story. Even sadder that these "elected" officials continue to get away with murder & voters don't care. Very good podcast. Well Done & educational. Hoping the needed attention and justice will come from this very informative podcast.

I’m glad they are shedding light on mistreatment and cover ups in this jail…but the reporter makes it seem like this is a hugely unique situation that he uncovered. Things like this happen in jails all over America all the time. There are larger systemic issues to consider that they are not connecting to. Also agree that the reporter speaks too slowly. It’s not helping me like it more.

Very hard to listen to… narration definitely makes a difference with podcasts.

This underdog’s tale is so compelling that it could be a movie. It takes a story of neglect, death, and corruption and breathes hope and justice into its bones. Though it’s well-written and a quality production, the decision to have Josh speak so slowly was a painful one. But no worries - listen at X1.25 or 1.5 and it’s fixed!

This is a horrible story but it turned into Justins political accolades, a bias narrative, and honestly a disgusting display by Wondery to allow such a one sided story. Justin and Lamont changed nothing. People are still dying. The first episode says Tyreek had signs of being beatin’ but the 5th he says there was no signs of how Tyreek died. So sad these deaths are being used for financial gain and politics. I sense a law suit against Wondery in the near future.

I listen to podcasts every day and I am only on episode three of this amazing podcast. I feel very moved to comment on what I’ve heard so far. Many may be surprised by the treatment of Jamal during his incarceration, unfortunately he is not an isolated incident and one of the many issues our prison system has. I speak from personal experience with my nephew and his mental illness and being incarcerated. His mental illness was being dealt with as if he was given a Band-Aid for a knife wound. The only difference in my story is one of my best friends is the lawyer for the ACLU. So luckily, we were able to get him the proper medication. This is a systemic issue that must be addressed. If you are going to incarcerate an individual, then you need to give them their proper medication and a safe place, including heat and water. What do you have done to this man and his family is truly a stain on our society.

The narration is a little hard to listen to due to odd cadence and enunciation. Couldn’t get into enjoying the podcast fully.

…so you know where this lazy reporting is headed.

A gut-wrenching yet inspiring story entailing the systemic oppression within our carceral system, and the grassroots movements needed to combat said-systemic abuse. We are the richest country in the world and pay millions of dollars for correctional services, no one should be murdered in our facilities nor should they be denied medical care/ medication due to “lack of funding”. The criminal justice system is broken in the United States. Please remember that our government works for us, the TAXPAYERS, as we pay their salaries.

I’m a de about true crime podcast listener have been for years. But the host of the show appears to be reading from notes or scripts and sounds like a robot and then over explain things and repeats them for fillers for the show. Sorry I just couldn’t listen anymore.

We all need to be made aware of this and the multiple other issues within corrections systems all over the US. Good job.

Tried to listen, but the narration was amateurish. He is trying way too hard with his enunciation and he’s routinely overemphasizing things.

I live in Dauphin County and love true crime podcasts so when a relative suggested I give this a listen I was skeptical at first. Well, let’s just say once I started listening, I did not stop! The thing is, most of us in this town have an idea of how corrupt this county is but this podcast confirms, validates and educates us on the truth of this place. The reporting is so intriguing that the only part I do not like is that it’s only 6 episodes!! Awesome job! We want more!

Why is he talking so slowly? It's painful to listen to. Are they trying to make the podcast longer or something?

Fantastic journalism shines an uncomfortably bright spotlight on government corruption. If this isn’t a call to action on a larger scale, I don’t know what is.

I went into this podcast not sure if I would find this interesting because I don’t know anything about prison and wasn’t sure if I wanted to learn. Eye opening! There have been deaths in my city’s prison that seemed unsettling. Corruption and cruel behavior can happen in any city. This podcast made me see these inmates as individuals who were treated inhumanely and how there are amazing people that care about them.

I’m struggling to imagine this kind of violence subjected on people who have little control over their circumstances in these prison walls. A young man, in a mental health crisis, being beaten to death is just unbelievable and heart breaking. Thank you for sharing this story and shedding on these monsters.
