Titus 1:1-9 | Gospel of Grace & Godliness
Preacher: Joel Fair Scripture: Titus 1:1-9 1. Gospel Identity V1-3 Common Faith & Grace V4 Grace Produces Godliness V5-9 Gospel of Grace & Godliness 2 Corinthians 8:16-17; 23-24 But thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same earnest care I have for you. For he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest he is going to you of his own accord. … As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker for your benefit. And as for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ. So give proof before the churches of your love and of our boasting about you to these men. Charles Spurgeon The gospel is something like an illustrated paper. The preacher’s words are the letterpress, but the pictures are the living men and women who form our churches. And like when people take up such a newspaper, they very often do not read the letterpress, but they always look at the pictures—so in a church: Outsiders may not come to hear the preacher, but they always consider, observe, and criticize the lives of the members. Romans 12:4-5 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

Mark 3:7-35 | Insiders & Outsiders
Preacher: Joel Fair Scripture: Mark 3:7-35 Crowd to Disciple Vs 7-11 Becoming Insiders Vs 13-21 & 31-35 Insiders Know The Spirit Vs 22-30 This is the business of Jesus - making insiders out of outsiders Pillar New Testament Commentary The status of insider or outsider is determined by one’s proximity and receptivity to Jesus. Pillar New Testament Commentary Discipleship does not consist in what disciples can do for Christ, but in what Christ can make of disciples. Kent Hughes What he did mean was that there is a deeper kinship than flesh and blood, a spiritual kinship which is characterized by obedience to the Father Pillar New Testament Commentary The disconcerting reference that Jesus “is out of his mind” reminds Mark’s readers that the religious authorities are not alone in their mistaken apprehensions of Jesus. Their opposition is the more explainable, for as outsiders they may be victims of ignorance, false reports, jealousy, or misguided zeal. The opposition of insiders is more troubling, for Jesus’ associates ought to be advocates, not adversaries. The very ambiguity of Mark’s wording, “the ones of him,” is a calculated reminder that those closest to Jesus may indeed oppose him, and that proximity to Jesus—even blood relationship or being called by Jesus—is no substitute for allegiance to Jesus in faith and following. John 14:6-7 Jesus says “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him." Matthew 16:16-18 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ Mark 8:33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man. " Mark 3:35 For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother. Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Mark 2:18–3:6 | Jesus' Authority & The Law
Preacher: Joel Fair Scripture: Mark 2:18–3:6 Lord of the Sabbath VS 2:23-28 Sabbath Restores Life VS 3:1-6 James Edwards The required fast on the Day of Atonement lasted a full twenty-four hours, whereas voluntary fasts as a rule extended only from dawn to dusk. Although not a legal requirement except in one instance, fast- ing had become in Jesus’ day a prerequisite of religious commitment, a sign of atonement of sin and humiliation and penitence before God, and a general aid to prayer. The rabbis often referred to fasting as “an affliction of the soul,” thereby designating it as a characteristic and sacrificial act of piety. Luke 18:9-14 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." John 16:20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Genesis 2:1-3 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. J. Woodhouse More than that, we may sense that God’s Law is intended to serve, not hinder, the coming of God’s kingdom. It is possible, as the Pharisees of Jesus’ day would prove again, to oppose God’s king in the name of obedience to God’s Law! R. C. Sproul The hypocritical religious authorities provoked Him to anger. The Greek word Mark uses here is not the word used for simple annoyance or even righteous indignation. It is the word for fury. Jesus was outraged that the religious leaders cared more about their traditions than the welfare of a suffering human being. But His anger was mixed with pain. Mark tells us that Jesus was grieved in His soul at the hardness of their hearts. In other words, He had compassion for them, too. Colossians 3:1-4 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Mark 1:29–39 | King Jesus, Healer & Restorer
Preacher: Joel Fair Scripture: Mark 1:29–39 Jesus Heals V29-34 Preach the Word Commentary Note the manner in which Jesus healed her. Luke says in the parallel account that he stood over her and rebuked the fever (Luke 4:39). (Matthew 8:15) says he touched her. Here in Mark we read that he took her by the hand. Thus, we have a composite picture of Christ standing close to her bed, taking her by the hand, rebuking the fever, and gently raising her up before Peter and his wide-eyed friends. Jesus Prays V35 PW Kent Hughes E. Stanley Jones once described prayer as a “time exposure to God.” He used the analogy of his life being like a photographic plate which, when exposed to God, progressively bore the image of God in keeping with the length of exposure. Jesus Proclaims V36-39 Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

The Mission Of The Church

Hear - And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? Believe - How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Luke 10:16 “The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” Mark 1:14b-15 ....Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Romans Road to Salvation Romans 3:10 Romans 3:23 Romans 5:8 Romans 6:23 Romans 10:9&10 James 1:22-25 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. Dietrich Bonhoeffer - The Cost of Discipleship Only he who believes is obedient, and only he who is obedient believes. James 2:17-18 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

Mark 1:12-13; Matthew 4:1-11 | The Temptation of Jesus
Preacher: Joel Fair Scripture: Mark 1:12-13; Matthew 4:1-11 On the Road With Jesus Driven By the Spirit Three Temptations Ministered To By Angels Why? - For His Glory 1 Corinthians 10:13 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. Jesus is satisfied! - Temptation feeds off our lack of satisfaction Hebrews 2:17-18 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Hebrews 4:14-16 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 2:14-15 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
