When you think about independent hip hop in Pittsburgh in the 2000s you have to consider the role that was played by Basick and the shows that were hosted at the Hkan hookah lounge from 2006-2008. He was one of the first to give stage time to a young Mac Miller, and also headlined shows that Wiz opened very early in his career. Basick Sickness became a band also in the late 2000s and I was a proud member as the DJ. Later it would expand further to five pieces, which can be seen in some of the music videos that were released over these years. Joe the drummer continues to make music with Kid Durango which is a fantastic local band. Basick has moved to California to work in agriculture, and B-Tips became a doctor (that's me). Regardless of the way in turned out the music and videos live on forever. While the conversation took an adversarial turn at times, I think it stands as an accurate vision of our relationship in 2023. CMJFlicks is one of the most dynamic and interesting people I've had a chance to talk to since starting this project. We discuss urban exploration, homelessness and deinstitutionalization, mental healthcare and policy in the US, connections between epilepsy and psychiatric illness, as well as benzodiazepines and addiction At just 26 he has managed to see and experience more than many do in their whole lives. He is an explorer, a film maker, and documentarian. He brings to life spaces and places that most of us will never have a chance to visit. He describes the dangers and goals of urban exploration; a hobby that involves finding, entering, and documenting abandoned and crumbling spaces, climbing to the tops of towers and spires, and uncovering aspects of civilization and society that often raise more questions than they answer. As a Pittsburgher he has access to the vast treasures of the rust belt. From Detroit to Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo, the warning signs of the failures of capitalism, globalism, and the rise of technology are all around us. Adam Nugget Kulik is a nugget in only the finest sense of the word. He is truly pure gold in a compact form. He could be compared to king midas from the legend because everything he touches turns to gold. He has a combination of killer work ethic (like when he remodeled The Goldmark into Pittsburgh’s only true DJ Bar in 6 months by himself), and natural talent (‘oh no the headspin guy is here’ a recent quote from a Pgh local recalling his dance battle days). Maybe most importantly he is a genuinely honest and kind person. His joy to work with and infectious positivity have made him the go to club rocker in the midwest and carried him to stages in Vegas, NYC, LA, and anywhere else he wants to go. He has done great interviews on the ROAD podcast and with DJ Zimmie that cover his origin story and I wanted to go into new ground so we talk a bit about what it takes to be a successful DJ, about his personal life and travels with his incredible wife Nicole, and many other topics.
