In the third episode of CrisisTalk, Hanna Meretoja talks about military narrative imagination, or war rhetoric related to the current coronavirus pandemic. She examines the master narrative of war and how it diminishes our narrative agency: it impairs our awareness of the complexity and specificity of the pandemic and impoverishes our “sense of the possible.”

Corinne Squire, professor of psychology at the University of East London and co-director of the Centre for Narrative Research, talks about dominant government narratives in the UK during the COVID-19 crisis. She also examines counter narratives to these stories.

Mark Freeman starts out in appreciation of the positive voices in the current crisis; scholars who hope for humankind to emerge from the ongoing struggles stronger than before. Mark hears these voices, yet he remains critical and identifies a narrative pandemic of misinformation and disinformation for which there is no vaccine. Ultimately, he offers a triple hermeneutic that my help us to move forward.
