On the morning of May 3rd, 1973, a man out walking his dog in Key Largo, Florida, stepped into a stretch of woods about a hundred yards off U.S. 1. Near mile marker 99.5, under a layer of sticks, leaves and dirt, he found two teenage girls. They were sisters. Maggie Jenkins was 18. Mary Jenkins was 16. They had come down from New Jersey for a spring trip to Key West, and less than 24 hours earlier, someone had seen them standing on the side of the road with their luggage, trying to hitch a ride home. For 53 years, nobody could say who stopped for them. This September, that finally changed.
