019- 5 Reasons People Don't Take You Seriously
SHOW DESCRIPTION
Reflecting on your life is important, it helps you move forward and grow. Rohit and I have 5 things for you to take a look at in your life to reflect on and see if they contribute to your overall image. How people perceive us has an impact on the opportunities we get. These five things take a look at your credibility and will help you see were you might be falling short. If people aren’t taking you seriously you should reflect on these 5 things.
- Not being true to your word
- Poor fallow through
- Not learning to separate work and play
- You give excuses
- Hanging with the wring crowd
The first issue, not being true to your word, is all about not doing what you say you will. As simple as it sounds too often we are guilty of doing this. When you say you will have something done or that you will send information to someone and then you don’t or you do it late then you are not being true to your word. When you commit to going on a trip with someone and then bail out then you are not staying true to your word. This is a problem because when you do this your word means less and less until people just don’t take your word any more.
The next issue, poor follow through, is about not putting in the best work you can to get something done on time. For example, I do these show notes for each podcast if I am late or have shotty work then my effort and my level of seriousness will be questioned. It is important to have quality with the things you do because these things are a direct representation of you.
The third issue, not learning to separate work and play, is crucial because it directly shows how serious you are about your work. When we bring play into work we become less efficient and goof around. Even with the reverse, bringing work into play, never having any pure fun free time. It is important to separate these things for efficiency, accountability, freedom, and so much more. When you can separate these things, you will look a lot more serious about the things that you are doing.
The fourth issue, giving excuses, is something that we all have been guilty of at one point. Rohit gives a great example of being late to coffee with a friend, when you get to the coffee shop 5 or 10 minutes late you tell your friends “hey sorry I was late, there was traffic.” The problem with this is that it is an excuse and not a justifying reason. When it comes to traffic we can easily control that by leaving earlier and giving yourself an appropriate amount of time for travel. An excuse is when you put blame onto someone or something else when you have the power to control the situation. When your tire goes flat it is not in your control and that is a true justification for being late.
The last issue, hanging with the wrong crowd, is for those people who hang out with people that don’t share the same values as you do. It is good to be diverse in the things you do and the people you are friends with but when it becomes a negative something needs to change. The people you hang out with will affect your subconscious. If you have dreams of being something else or having more drive and passion and the people you surround yourself with don’t share that then they will bring you down.
