Hour 1 (9.16) It was a brutal night in the San Fernando Valley: A fatal bus crash in Chatsworth killed two passengers after a speeding SUV T-boned a bus that had the right of way, and then NBC’s News Chopper 4 went down while covering the scene, killing journalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw. Tim plays Mark Brown’s ABC report as details pile up — the SUV driver has a long rap sheet, is booked on suspicion of murder, and is being held on more than $4 million bail. Burbank native Ross Benson of myburbank.com, who knew Marciniw for some 50 years, calls in to talk about his friend. NBC has spent the last 24 hours covering its own people; early on, some in the business thought it was a Channel 7 bird, and Tim worried it was his friend Chris Christi. All of this kicked off when a woman speeding in an SUV T-boned the bus, which had the right of way, resulting in the death of two passengers. News Chopper 4 was covering the crash when it went down. That woman had quite the long rap sheet and is now booked on suspicion of murder. She's being held on $4 million-plus bail. 6:35 — Ross Benson, who runs the website myburbank.com, was born and raised in Burbank and has lived there for 70 years. He worked with NBC 4 pilot George Marciniw, who perished in last night's helicopter crash, with the pair knowing each other for some 50 years. Ross is talking about the tragedy and his relationship with George. 6:50 — It's been tough for NBC over the past 24 hours, who have been reporting on the death of their colleagues since News Chopper 4 went down last night around 7 p.m. Initially, many people in news thought it was a Channel 7 helicopter that went down, and Tim was concerned for his friend Chris Christi.
