Our guest, Karen, is an associate patent attorney at Spruson & Ferguson which means she provides representation and advice regarding patenting and related intellectual property matters.
Patents and IP are particulary important when it comes to new technology and innovation, especially in the Biotech/Pharmaceutical/Life-Sciences and Engineering world.

In this podcast, we chat with Karen about:
•What IP law is
•How this career integrates so well within the STEM industry

Caitlin Selway is a Genome Informatician at SA Pathology, where she focusses on COVID strains, identifying variants from overseas - a pretty important job if you ask us!
Caitlin started off her Science education with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, followed by Honours in Genetics and Evolution, before finishing it off with a PhD on low biomass environments.
Research wise - Caitlin has published and contributed to many papers, she has won numerous awards, and it would seem as if this was the plan from the get-go...
However, Caitlin (like many of us) didn't actually know where she wanted her career to go, or where her research might take her.
We talk to Caitlin about:
•Applying for jobs after her PhD
•How she overcame not knowing what to do next
•Her tips for post-graduate research
•What being a bioinformatician looks like
Disclaimer: This podcast was filmed in July 2021 - a lot has changed with COVID information since then!

Who knew that Sophie's favourite (and best) subjects at school would become the foundation for her career as a Meterologist.
Sophie entered university studying a Bachelor of Science and completing Honours in Physical Chemistry.
However, it was her interest in the environment and her wish to make a difference in the community that led her to travel interstate and pursue her real passion... resulting in the addition of a Masters of Environmental Science and Law to her CV.
We sit down with Sophie to discuss what her role as a graduate meteorologist looked like*, what it was like moving interstate to pursue her studies, what the graduate program looks like and why the Bureau of Meterology is so important in assisting with climate change, and real life disasters.
*Note: At the time of recording, Sophie's role was Graduate Meteorologist. Since recording Sophie has been promoted to Aviation Meteorologist.
