Dr. Courtney D. Jones is an award-winning Bach performing and recording artist who has also emerged as a leading figure in contemporary performance and pedagogy, chamber and brass band conducting, pedagogy, and service to inner-city youth through music outreach programs., Dr. Jones is in high demand as a soloist, clinician, and adjudicator while transcending stylistic boundaries performing throughout North America and Internationally.
In addition to his solo performance career and performing with well-known jazz and popular artists, he has shared the stage with famous artists or groups such as Kenny Burrell, B.B. King, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rihanna, Lalo Schifrin, Vanessa Williams, Boy George and The Culture Club, and Stevie Wonder. Dr. Jones has performed as a featured soloist or collaborative artist with the Golden States Pop Orchestra, the Southeast Symphony Orchestra, the Macao Orchestra (China), the Pasadena Orchestra, the Debut Orchestra, the Inspiravi Chamber Orchestra, the Orchid City Brass Band, the Oslo Philharmonic (Norway), the Long Beach Opera, Symphony of the Americas, the Los Angeles Trombone Collective in collaboration with James Miller, the Salt-River Brass Band, the Gateways Festival Orchestra, and was appointed Musical Director of the Orchid City Brass Band of South Florida. Courtney is also represented by the Naxos and Summit Music labels and his feature film and television credits include music performed for Glee, Notes from Dad, Cougar Town, and Criminal Minds, among other works mentioned on his personal website’s media category.
Dr. Jones completed his Doctor of Musical Arts and taught at UCLA, served as Visiting Professor of Trumpet at the University of Iowa, Lecturer of Music at Columbus State University, and currently Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Artistic Director of Jazz and Chamber Ensembles at Florida Atlantic University. Between teaching and solo performing engagements, Jones has promoted music education and instrumental performance in inner-city schools through the Music Outreach Program at UCLA, The Harmony Project of Los Angeles, Trumpets 4 Kids in Dallas, Texas, the Nat King Cole Hope, Inc. Foundation and the Gateways Music Festival in Rochester, New York. Each of these programs offers schoolchildren arts-in-education opportunities. These programs are essential because they provide underserved, inner-city students, and communities with musical training and mentorship that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Happy New Year! We hope everyone is off to a great start this year. We had the opportunity to talk with performer, practice coach, podcaster, and content creator, Ryan Beach!
As a performer, Ryan has served as the principal trumpet with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra since 2014. Before that, he served as principal trumpet with the Indianapolis Symphony for one year.
As a practice coach, Beach takes on clients and engages in masterclasses to help others better understand skill development, practice organization, and how to have a healthy perspective on a life in music. Ryan has developed a system he calls the GOLD Method that helps creative musicians that are struggling to see progress in their musical practice by increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of their work. In addition to his abilities as a musician, Ryan also hosts a podcast titled “That’s Not Spit, It’s Condensation!” in which he interviews musicians and industry professionals to learn more about them as people and to get new perspectives on what it means to achieve success professionally as well as personally.
As a content creator, Ryan curates a YouTube channel as well as other social media platforms to connect with others and share what he has learned in an effort to help others continue growing.

Jean Laurenz is an eclectic musician who loves variety and collaboration. She is the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at The University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a performer, Jean has enjoyed appearances with Adele, The Hanson Brothers, The Boston Pops, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Her favorite genre is chamber music and she frequents this arena with innovative ensembles including Seraph Brass, The Knights, A Far Cry, and with Carnegie Hall’s resident fellow chamber group, Ensemble Connect.
Jean is also a vocalist and stage performer who enjoys multi-dimensional artistic performances. She is the artistic producer of Koizumi, a staged multi-media performance piece that incorporates digital projection, chamber music, theater, and folklore. Jean toured Europe with Lucerne Festival’s dance and theatrical production, Divamania. As a vocalist, she has performed the national anthem and other musical services at most major Chicagoland sporting arenas, including performances with the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, and the Chicago Fire.
Jean holds degrees in trumpet performance and choral education from Yale University and Northwestern University. She is a passionate educator, social activist, and teaching artist. Her work with Handel and Haydn Society and Carnegie Hall has connected her to public school students in Boston and the Bronx, and she has also served as a public school teacher in Evanston, IL. These experiences helped shape her artistic perspective and leniency towards multi-sensory collaborations. Jean has curated children’s shows for both Carnegie Hall and the Boston Symphony, and she is a current META Fellow. When she is not performing or teaching, Jean enjoys rock climbing, running, and yoga.

Dr. Borden is an active clinician and soloist, having presented recitals and masterclasses at numerous universities and conferences around the country. These include Colburn Conservatory, Ithaca College, University of North Carolina Greensboro, University of Northern Arizona, the Hawaii Youth Symphony, the International Trumpet Guild Conference and the International Women's Brass Conference, among more. Dr. Borden has competed in the National Trumpet Competition as both a soloist and an ensemble member, as well as having coached students successfully into the semi-final rounds of the competition. Dr. Borden completed her doctoral studies in Trumpet Performance at Arizona State University, where, alongside her playing and appointment as Teaching Assistant, she researched heavily in the field of wellness for musicians and served as instructor for a weekly class titled Movement for Musicians.
Dr. Borden is enthusiastic about performance as a tool for educational outreach and leadership. Evidence of this is shown in her participation as a founding member and serving as Personnel Director of the Phoenix Brass Collective and involvement in outreach programs such as the Aspen Music Festival and School with the Backcountry Brass Quintet. As an entrepreneur, Dr. Borden currently acts as co-owner and CEO of a virtual yoga studio, Yoga for All Musicians, catering specifically to the physical and emotional needs of musicians. She has published multiple articles and developed workshops on ways to incorporate wellness into a musician's lifestyle in order to counteract repetitive motion injuries, battle performance anxiety, and maintain a sustainable music career.
Dr. Borden received her Master's degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Colorado - Boulder where she taught as a Teaching Assistant as well as performed with the Graduate Brass Quintet. She is also a proud alumna of SUNY Potsdam where she received a Bachelor's degree in Trumpet Performance and her love of brass chamber music was established in the Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet. Her principal trumpet teachers include David Hickman, Dr. John Ellis, Terry Sawchuk, Justin Bartels, and Herb Smith.

Joey Tartell is Professor of Trumpet and the Director of Undergraduate Studies at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Before joining the faculty, he enjoyed a career as an in-demand lead and free lance trumpet player. Joey was the lead player for Maynard Ferguson, touring the United States, Australia, Asia, and Europe, and can be heard on the recording “These Cats Can Swing.” He also played lead for the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, including a State Department tour of Egypt; the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, including a State Department tour of India and appearances at the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals; and the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
Although teaching full time, Mr. Tartell remains an active performer. He is a regular guest lead trumpet/soloist with several orchestras for Pops concerts, including serving as the Guest Principal for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s entire 2014-15 Pops season. Joey has also played with the St. Louis, Houston, Cincinnati, Detroit, National Arts Centre (Ottawa), and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. Also active in the recording studios, he has recorded for the Bob and Tom Show, Hal Leonard Publications, Shawnee Press, Cedar Point Amusement Park, Williams Gaming, and many others. Joey has also toured with Boston Brass and Canadian Brass.
Mr. Tartell is also active as a soloist and clinician. Recently, he has been a featured soloist and clinician at both the International Trumpet Guild conference and the National Trumpet Competition. He maintains an active calendar as a clinician nationally, presenting clinics from Boise, Idaho to Tallahassee, Florida last year.
Joey has a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Miami, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he was also awarded a Performer’s Certificate. He had the great fortune to study with Barbara Butler, Mel Broiles, Gil Johnson, and Vince DiMartino.
