This week, Anna and Oli return to horror and talk the latest instalment in the Scream franchise, Scream 6 (2023).
After surviving the Ghostface murders of the previous film, sisters Sam and Tara move to NYC to start fresh, attend college and escape their horrible, traumatic past. Unfortunately, what they cannot escape from is the conspiracies and reputation they have garnered online following these attacks, which leaves them as prime targets for the recently relocated new Ghostface killer. A staple of the horror genre, this film franchise embraces a meta awareness of its own medium and genre, and was shot in Montreal in locations deeply nostalgic to both Anna and Oli.

This week, Anna and Oli are joined by industry insider Tess to discuss Damien Chazelle's musical La La Land (2016).
Mia (Emma Stone) is an aspiring actress living in Los Angeles and waiting for her big break when she meets Sebastien (Ryan Gosling), an aspiring jazz pianist. The two immediately fall in love, recognizing the deep passion and ambition they possess for their respective crafts. While initially their relationship serves as a motivational launchpad for their careers, they both begin to realize that success may require compromising or even sacrificing the powerful feeling they have for one another.
A film that is deeply aware and celebrates the musical genre's history and aesthetics, it is a melancholic story of the artist's struggle to choose between love and art.

This week, Anna and Oli turn to anime, and discuss the Satoshi Kon’s classic Perfect Blue (1997).
Mima is a beautiful young Japanese pop-star and member of the J-pop group CHAM! when she decides to quit and pursue a career in acting. However even after her career change, Mima soon realizes that she cannot escape the horrific truth behind her success as a performer: the public’s perception of her, especially of her predominantly male audience, and in particular an obsessed stalker impersonating her online. The pressure of image, beauty and the price she is willing to pay for her success increasingly weigh on Mima, and her sanity begins to unravel in what is one of the most confusing and haunting third acts of this film genre. A violent and surreal exploration of gendered beauty standards, the pressures of fame and celebrity, and a deconstruction of the film’s true enemy: male gaze.

This week, Anna and Oli talk Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010).
Scott Pilgrim is a underachieving, mid-twenties loser living in Toronto and trying to make it with his garage-rock band when he meets and instantly falls in love with an endearing new girl in town, Ramona Flowers. Scott quickly learns however that in order to date Ramona, he will need to defeat the Legion of Evil Exes: a group of Ramona's ex-partners who, united in heartbreak, vowed to never let anyone else get dumped by Ramona. What ensues is a series of epic CGI boss-battles in which Scott must seek to understand her exes' backstories and perspectives in order to defeat them, and in doing so gains a better understanding of Ramona's perspective with regards to relationships and the difficulties in loving and trusting others.
It has one of the best casts (Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman) and is perhaps the best comic book adaptation to film!
