(Special Guest Ash Frith)
On this week’s VERY special episode of CheapShow, Paul and Eli tackle something they are not particularly comfortable talking about, nor do they have a lot of knowledge on this subject… Football! But why are they even tackling this topic, is it because of the 2026 World Cup taking place in the USA? Why, yes. It is. They’re cynically chasing a trend, but in CheapShow’s own particular way. Luckily, they have a helping hand to guide them through, as the original fair-weather co-host, Ash Frith, joins the show after a LONG absence. Over the next 90 minutes (including injury time), the thrifty threesome will explore the cult of football fandom, taste some World Cup inspired snacks, investigate the history of World Cup mascots and try to decipher the 1982 England Football Team World Cup Celebration album. Yes. A football team released a load of songs. How does it go? Well, you’ll find out in this week’s soccerific edition of the economy comedy podcast!

After last week’s mega walkabout, it’s time for Eli and Paul get back to what they do best… arguing over the price of random charity shop tat. Thanks to a PO Box delivery from Ireland, the Cheap Chaps have an episode’s worth of odd crap to price up for those delicious “p’twings”. Luckily, it’s not all bric-a-brac, the PO Box also has a few things to slurp on too. There are three Japanese Fanta flavours to investigate. The only real problem is that these drinks are out of date, so will their studies be impaired by potential soda rot? However, if you think Paul and Eli are in for a rough time with those fizzy drinks, you need to wait until they get to one particular item in the Price of Shite game… I mean, how bad can a candle smell? It’s just a candle. Right?

It’s finally time for Part Two of our Cambridge Tat Hunt adventure! This week, Paul and Eli stumble onto a wealth of charity shops that, frankly, becomes a little overwhelming. They don’t have all the time in the world, so the cheap chaps try to cram in as many shops as possible before they close up for the day. Hopefully, they’ll find what they need with the £10 budget they’ve been given… But who will get the most/best/worst stuff when the final evaluation arrives? As you can imagine, it’s never this easy for Paul and Eli, so in amongst all the shopping, they manage to get lost looking for a building Eli can’t shut up about, find out their train has been cancelled and, once again, discover that they may have a problem finding a private place to weigh up the spoils of their hunt. It’s another ramble that will either delight or bemuse!

Back when CheapShow was only a couple of dozen or so episodes old, the economy comedy podcast was originally recorded in Cambridge, where Paul had his fill of charity shops to explore. However, despite recording there for almost two years, they’d never done a “walkabout” episode. So this week, to make up for lost time, Paul and Eli are heading back to Cambridge for a wander and a “Tat Hunt”. Not only that, but because Ep 500 will be a LIVE EVENT at the Cambridge Junction venue in August, it gives them a chance to track down and snoop about the theatre. The Tat Hunt rules are in place… They both get £10 to spend on whatever they can… Trinkets, Toys, Tracks or Textbooks, and they get to review them in next week’s conclusion. So here we are, Part One of another Tat Hunt adventure that ends up being all “rather pleasant”, which is a delightful change!

It’s time to dive into another book in this week’s CheapShow! Thanks to a kind listener, Paul has gotten his hands on a book called “London Lore” by Steve Roud. It tells of the tall tales and myths of London, so the cheap chaps have a look at some places they are familiar with. They stumble on a truly nonsense poltergeist story that fails to impress, but their second story is a lot more interesting. Turns out that the famous “Pearly Kings and Queens” of the UK capital have a truly fascinating beginning, not in the East of London… but in the North? If all that reading isn’t your taste, how about some Sauce Report action? Eli’s been informed that there is a range of sauces found in B&M, that are based on Seabrooks’ crisp flavours! How good can they be? It’s up to the Sauce Professors to give them a proper taste test, JUST for you. Also, it seems all this “Content House” rubbish is getting TOO intrusive for Paul & Eli!

Every now and then, Cheapshow likes to go a little “wild in the aisle” when it comes to charity shop shopping… This week, they get to put their spending skills to the test when Paul whips out a board game based on a beloved 1990s game show, Supermarket Sweep! Hosted by Dale Winton, contestants ran around a huge supermarket, hunting for items and answering food based questions. But will the board game reflect the excitement of the TV show? You probably already have a good idea on the outcome to that, in a classic Gannon’s Golden Games. Eli’s also got to sweet treats to sample, with a return to the Froth Shop. The candy store has reopened, but sadly, an all too familiar face is running the shop. To make matters worse, Paul is definitely not going to like some of the gummies on offer. It’s all going to be very disappointing, isn’t it? Oh and Eli is MEGA hung over.

Sometimes, CheapShow is inspired by the random discoveries they find in the odd corners of the internet. This week is prime example of that. Paul has discovered something called https://worldwidesidewalkjoy.com that invites people to wander around their local area, picking up and dropping off random toys and trinkets to share with strangers. It’s a cute idea, and CheapShow wants in. After a look over the website’s global map, they realise that there are four of these trinket swap boxes in London, so why not go and find them? What this leads to is a reasonably fractious walkabout episode that invokes joy, rage and confusion. It in no way leads to an argument that was so unpleasant that it had to get cut from the show. Nope. Not at all. Will CheapShow survive this week’s episode? We guess you’ll have to listen and find out!
