Chat With Your Kids
Chat With Your Kids
Marcie Calder
Our story begins with “the Talk.” Let’s be honest, parenting is challenging. Children are curious. They constantly interrogate the world around them. Parenting can sometimes feel like being an expert in everything: nursing, human development, nutrition, cooking, event planning, finances, housekeeping… the list goes on. Kids often put parents on the spot with innocent questions and the genuine expectation that their parents will know the answers. And sometimes, these questions can catch us off guard. We may be expected to give answers for topics we thought we had more time to prepare for. And sometimes, those topics are the ones we secretly hoped would never come up! But kids are resilient and active learners – they could probably handle these topics in some way.Probably the most common example we’ve encountered is the “sex talk.” Some time ago, we were at a party with a group of friends. The conversation turned to people sharing their different experiences with the sex talk. We listened with interest, and we heard people’s experiences naturally falling across a spectrum. Many people shared that their parents either avoided the sex talk completely, or took a kind of “one and done” approach that left them with more questions than answers. A few others described how their parents were extremely open about sex, but did not provide enough age-appropriate guidance or information. But one person’s story stood out. He explained how his parents were open and earnest in providing support, information, and guidance according to his naturally developing curiosity. He described how he felt confident and secure about the topic and appreciated his parent’s honest and specific guidance. This inspired us, because his lived experience gave evidence that the Chat With Your Kids approach can and does work! His parents were not experts in human development. They were ordinary people who understood the importance of connecting with their child, listening to their natural and genuine questions, and having many small open, honest, and age-appropriate conversations over time.Join us on this journey explore how to chat with kids about important topics, like sex, relationships, finances, current events, and so much more!
