Chaos, managed. Facilitating learning at home.
Chaos, managed. Facilitating learning at home.
Wayne Russell
Parents have been at home with their children for several months. And, children may continue to stay at-home. Summer camps may be cancelled again, and entertainment options for kids are limited as we navigate the new normal. For many of us, home learning has been stressful and chaotic at times. We are tired and burnt out. How can the chaos be managed, for the weeks and months ahead? We answer this question, one episode at a time. Helping families facilitate learning is the mission of this podcast. Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chaosmanaged/support

Our first 19 minutes of home learning / June 29, 2020
This is the audio of our son's and my first 19 minutes of home learning (HL). L was a little quiet at first, but after a few minutes, he became much more talkative. The kids are now on an outdoor recess break. One more 50-minute HL period after morning break and then one more period this afternoon. We’ll do 3 HL periods on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays and 4 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (17 periods per week). We are revising our lockdown daily schedule to better reflect what we will focus on during each period (There will be some flexibility i.e., if the unit of inquiry (UOI) lends itself well to math concepts, there may be fewer stand-alone math periods during the 6-week UOI). I’ll post the “home learning daily schedule” later. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chaosmanaged/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chaosmanaged/support

#6 We took the plunge this week into the homeschooling world
We took a big step this week. We believe it is a step forward, not backwards, but a step that creates a little anxiety and anticipation. We have decided to withdraw our two children from their school here in the province of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chaosmanaged/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chaosmanaged/support

#3 Got skills?
Is education about accumulating knowledge or is education about building skills? If it’s about building skills, what skills do our children need to flourish?
