You have nothing to fear but fear itself, nothing to give but blood, sweat, and tears, nothing to lose but your change! Here he is boys, here he is world - heeeeeere's FATS! You're in for a brilliant film this week. I chose a 70s film for you Celluloid Barbarettes that I thought was a B-horror Movie, but turned out to be something so much more. A romantic psychological horror that nearly makes one weep at the end. Hopkins, Burgess and Ann-Margret are top of their game, and Attenborough's direction and Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack are a thing of real excellence and utter beauty. It really is very tasteful and terrifying in equal measure, which is a pretty hard thing to pull off. Myself, Andy and Jono completed our longest ever pod and we really hope you get a cinematic kick from our musings. The plot: A ventriloquist is at the mercy of his vicious dummy while he tries to renew a romance with his high school sweetheart... HAWKMEN...DIVE! A rapturous return to the podcasting havens. We clambered aboard our Rocket Cycle and pinged off to the Planet Mongo to do audio battle with Ming the Merciless. It was a joyous episode filled with sequins, ear blindly epic gold armous, gorgeous customers, glamorous sets, somewhat wooden acting, and some surprisingly scary moments to boot involving eyeballs (there was also some kinky BDSM thrown in for good measure). A short synopsis of the film - Flash Gordon is a 1980 space opera film directed by Mike Hodges, based on the King Features comic strip of the same name created by Alex Raymond. The film stars Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson, Ornella Muti, Max von Sydow and Topol, with Timothy Dalton, Mariangela Melato, Brian Blessed and Peter Wyngarde in supporting roles. The film follows star quarterback Flash Gordon (Jones) and his allies Dale Arden (Anderson) and Hans Zarkov (Topol) as they unite the warring factions of the planet Mongo against the oppression of Ming the Merciless (von Sydow), who is intent on destroying Earth. Now give it a listen you BASTARDS! Please rate and review the podcast, it helps us soar up the charts and achieve world domination. Oh what a thoroughly lovely episode this was. Myself and my good pal/co-host/photographer and all round Renaissance man Jono Bond plopped our little booties down in the garden to record a lovely podcast all about the fabulous Paul Thomas Anderson film, 'The Master'. In it we see the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman as quasi-religious charismatic cult leader Lancaster Dodd, poisoning the already (let's face it) dirty mind of Joaquin Phoenix, who plays Freddie Quell, a bent and broken WW2 veteran. We're huge fans of PTA, and had great fun yacking on about this underrated study in human malleability, belief, idols etc. This truly is a MASTERpiece. Apologies for the noisy bird that disturbed our podding halfway through! Although some say this actually improved the quality of our discussion. I'll let you be the judge! This was recorded the day before we hit the road with 'The Divine Comedy' and rocked the UK on the funnest week of our musical lives. Clamber aboard this ship of fools and drink deeply from our homemade ship fuel grog - although be warned, this hooch will be sure to poison ya. Wozers, howzers, monkey in your trouzers! Here's our latest slice of piping hot pod. This was our first ever fan request episode - sent in by Amy Kelly, who wanted us to watch and yack on about the 80s SMASH 'Back to the Future'. And boy, oh boy, we YACKED. We yacked hard. Andy, myself and Jono really enjoyed it though, it's a fabulous time traveling yarn that has sent fans potty ever since it came out in the mid 80s, and now you can be sent loopy listening to us ruin the film for you. Live the American capitalist dream, jump in our DeLorean podmobile, and lets scoot off to the small, white picketed haven of Hill Valley, avoiding big jocks, and amorous mothers as much as possible. Toot toot! All aboard! Listen on to hear my slight trifles with Christopher Lloyd's performance as Doc Brown, the complications of hiring a sexual predator (seriously why the hell did they hire Biff?) and what we REALLY think of white 50s suburbia! SERIES 2 BEGINS IN EARNEST!After 20 episodes, and a little break, I decided to call this episode the beginning of Series 2. Gives it a nice little bit of neatness doesn't it, and who doesn't like that? 20 in series 1, who bloody knows how many in series 2? Before we gorged ourselves on perhaps the most famous British cult film of all time, this week we fired up the podmobile, stuffed it full of the finest wines known to humanity and shuttled off to Penrith. Only then did we strip naked, cover ourselves in deep heat, and begin podcasting as aggressively as humanely possible. Why of course it's Bruce Robinson's 'Withnail & I', the quintessential cult flick, a film that launched the careers of Richard E. Grant (I first pumped the air) and Paul McGann (Do you like craft beer?). Joining me was regular plodding podders, Jono Bon and Andy Blythe, and we had a great laugh, picking this fabulous cinematic marvel apart. Go off and watch this film, it's available for free on YouTube, it's got rather a wonderfully chilling and tragic performance by Richard Griffiths as the old lush, Uncle Monty. 'YOU'RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER PODCAST!'Bloody hell, it's been too long hasn't it? We've been busy putting out another smash hit (Rainy Days in June), so understandably our tiny brains have been on these other matters. But this week we bit down on Steven Spielberg's greatest achievement, 'JAWS'. We also welcomed in returning guest Andy Blythe, to chat about this flick, (his favourite ever film actually). Oh what a joy it was to yack on about Robert Shaw's scenery chomping, epic performance, plus, it was extra nice to see Andy on zoom sporting a 'Quint' cap, drinking from an Amity Island mug, and other such Jaws related memorabilia tumbling round him into shot. This was our 20th episode, and what a wild ride it's been... Keep on swimming, keep on back stroking, keep on doggy paddling across this wonderful globe of ours. Keep the faith, show Barbara some love, and shower us with affection, after all, it's Christmas 'n' that'. After a bit of a break where we rocked the Isle of Wight Festival and skived off down to France, Celluloid Barbara returned to Monkey Planet to tackle the Sci-Fi epic 'Planet of the Apes'. It's a fabulous film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner that sees a group of very randy explorer/scientists visit a strange planet that has a topsy turvy society, where Chimps/Gorillas/Orangutans are king, and men are simply beasts. Tune in to hear our breakdown of this hairy quest, that'll leave you itching for more monkey content. Don't worry though, there's a whole slew of remakes/sequels/prequels for you to get your juicy hit of chimpy content. Also go and read the book by Pierre Boulle, it's gorillatastic. Well, with a name like 'Pierre Boulle', why wouldn't it be? Please rate and review the podcast, it helps us soar up the charts and achieve world domination. Be afraid... Be very afraid! We're back! This week I was joined by Andy Blythe, cine enthusiast and all round good bloke. We picked apart the astonishingly weepy 'The Fly' (1986) from David Cronenberg. It's a great flick about a man that mutates into a human/fly hybrid, and it's way more tender than it sounds. This slender film stars the terrific Jeff Goldblum, hand acting his little argyle socks off, and it also includes the great actress, Geena Davis, who plays anguish better than anyone throughout this tremendous movie. It was a skeleton staff at Celluloid Barbara HQ today, with quite possibly the worst audio recording ever put to tape. We sincerely apologise. This week we were looking at 'First Man', an astonishingly moving work by Damien Chazelle, including star turns by the stoic Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong and the Lemur-eyed Claire Foy as his supportive but concerned wife and ballast at home. This week we took a trip down the Cahulawassee River in our little canoe, and myself and Jono took on the mighty mountain men of Georgia. Watching and analysing John Boorman's Deliverance, we discussed Burt Reynolds outrageous attire, squealing piggies and striking banjo players!
