The Bamboo Ceiling | 2nd Generation Asian American Workplace Challenges
The bamboo ceiling for 2nd generation Asian Americans in the West is a glass ceiling for the children of immigrants who are ethnic minorities from Asia. In this video, I cover the implicit biases and discuss the implicit association test (IAT) and the common stereotypes that Asians face with the bamboo ceiling. By outlining the problem, we can look at ways of breaking the bamboo ceiling by reinventing what Margaret Chin calls the "Asian American playbook" in her book Stuck: Why Asian Americans Don't Reach the Top of the Corporate Ladder, to circumvent discrimination by discussing Susan Fiske’s stereotype content model and other sociological research.

Bamboo Ceiling | 4 Problems 1st Generation Asian Immigrants Face at Work
Asian Americans face a bamboo ceiling in the Western workplace. The bamboo ceiling for Asian immigrants in the west is similar to the glass ceiling for ethnic minorities. However, Asian Americans face their unique stereotypes, such as implicit biases that lead to the Asian American glass ceiling. In this episode, I discuss data to support the bamboo ceiling exists, Asian stereotypes, and how this results in what Reza Hasmath calls the ethnic penalty leading to underemployment and overeducation in the West.

Glass ceiling for immigrants | How to break the glass ceiling
The glass ceiling for immigrants and ethnic minorities is a common obstacle many immigrants encounter in the workplace. However, is this glass ceiling discrimination? In this episode, I explain how immigrants and ethnic minorities can break the glass ceiling in a working culture of diversity where they may face stereotypes. I use sociology to explain reasons for the glass ceiling and ethnic penalty with social and cultural capital for workplace discrimination and workplace stereotypes. My career advice for immigrants is that they need to build soft skills using the big five personality traits to crack the glass ceiling.

Implicit Bias and Diversity Training | How Implicit Bias ACTUALLY Works in Neuroscience
Implicit bias, diversity, and inclusion are hot topics in Western society. Often, the implicit association test (IAT) is used as the implicit bias test for implicit bias training. In this episode, I give the definition of implicit bias and discuss the neuroscience, psychology, and sociology of implicit and unconscious bias in the workplace. I break down the types of implicit and unconscious bias and its stereotypes by using Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking Fast and Slow. This diversity and bias training/workshop also covered the big five personality traits. This presentation was given at the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation (CITT) in 2020.
