But What Do We Know?
But What Do We Know?
Zoe & Daniel
By exploring issues of race, xenophobia and equity in America, two twenty-somethings, Zoe and Daniel, talk about their experiences living in New York City and how their diverse backgrounds have informed the way they navigate today’s society. This pair has a lot to say, but then again... what do they know?
New York, New York
Welcome back to But What Do We Know! This week Zoe and Daniel play another round of "Guess That Word." The duo decides to slow things down this week and reminisce on their lives in the big apple. Daniel reflects on the culture shock he experienced when he first arrived in NYC from Guyana while Zoe chats about how easy the MTA system was for her in comparison to driving in the suburbs. Monuments: What They Say About Us
Welcome back to But What Do We Know! This week, Zoe and Daniel sit down to chat about the recent removal of the Robert E. Lee statue in Virginia. The statue was originally installed about 130 years ago and was the largest confederate statue in Richmond, VA. Over the past several years, we have seen confederate statues across the U.S. get vandalized and we've seen movements like Black Lives Matter and Indigenous groups fight for their removal. We take a moment to unpack what these monuments really represent and why their removal cause so much controversy across different communities. Daniel also compares the statues we see in the U.S. to the monuments that he is used to seeing in Guyana, and the duo chat about why those differences might exist. CRT: Critical To Whom?
Welcome back to But What Do We Know! This week, Zoe and Daniel catch us up on their weeks and their school prep. Daniel brings up reincarnation and the pair discuss which animal they would like to be reincarnated as if they were able to choose. The topic of this week is Critical Race Theory and the backlash that has come as more and more public schools push to integrate such teachings into their curriculums. The duo ask each other why this pushback exists and what kind of damage this lack of awareness does to our society as a result. Be sure to tune in and let us know what you think. Black Enough: Generations Divided
Welcome back to But What Do We Know! This week, Zoe and Daniel celebrate the poll participation that's been seen on instagram and discuss the conversations they've had with peers regarding the catcalling episodes. Daniel, a Guyanese immigrant and Zoe, a Black Bi-racial American discuss the ever-present tension between their respective racial groups. There has long been competition within the African diaspora and it can especially be seen between Black Caribbeans and Black Americans. We attempt to unpack what might be causing this tension as we discuss socioeconomic status, stereotypes passed down by grandparents, and how we have seen these harmful paradigms in action within our own generation. This topic hits close to home for us as well as for many of our listeners. We are not experts nor the gospel on this topic but we are so eager to hear what our listeners think about this! Feel free to shoot us a message on instagram - all discussions are welcome. Happy listening! The Unwritten Law
Welcome back to another episode of But What Do We Know! This week, Zoe tells us about her first experience getting scammed while Daniel shares how he's been staying committed to his fitness routine. As a follow up from our last episode, we discuss the ways in which Black people and POC are targeted in today's society. We explore how this issue can be seen in a few areas, emphasizing the "War on Drugs" and its racist history as well as the way Black people and POC are viewed in the athletic field. We chat about the "unwritten law" of what Black people are unfortunately robbed of when it comes to basic human decency. As always, we would love for you to let us know what you think about this episode and if anything we spoke about resonates with you.
