Throughout history advertising has been the driving force of convincing consumers that their product is the right product. Something they not only want, but need. Marketing a brand is difficult and companies try different techniques that sometimes, backfire. We are going to look at some of the most epic fails in marketing by big brands over the 21st Century. Formerly we were known as the Podcast that covers the news that you really care about--which is basically random and ignoring Politics and focusing on stories from Video Games, Movies, Television Shows, and mainly the Wild Stories of the Week. Prior to that we were a movie podcast, video game podcast, and comic book podcast. Whether you are a long term fan that has been through the titles of Buffalo Soapstone, Rings & Dragons, Film Gauge, the New 52, Studio D, Hero Heads, or the original show The Liquid Gamer Podcast... we are happy to talk to you once again. If you are new to the show, welcome to The Ranger Ryan Show, we hope to talk to you as long as you are willing to listen. Be Well and Good Gaming!
John Carter | Marketing from Mars
Welcome to one of the worst marketing campaigns in the history of cinema. I consider this the movie that Marvel killed, not only in the numbers but in the fact that Disney bought Marvel and abandonded this project from a marketing perspective. Imagine a movie that everyone was behind and had a great team behind the scenes with source material that goes back one hundred years and continues to stay relevant. A series that inspired Star Wars and Avatar is now a joke in Hollywood and considered a flop by everyone in the mainstream press. But the answer we are going to discuss today is, why??? It wasn't becuase the actors were not as well known, it's not that they didn't have the budget, it's not that they didn't have the team and artists neccesariy to make this film. They had all of that! It was simply, the marketing. Now let's talk a little martian marketing, on this episode of The Ranger Ryan Show.

Groupon | Cheap and Nasty
What started as an idea became one of the most exciting tech start up since Google. But then they went public and faced a pandemic head on with primarily group activities. So... We will discuss the marketing fail that Groupon unleashed in 2011 followed by their entry in the markets. Today we discuss a topic that I know from the inside and out, as both a merchant and user. Alright, without further delay--pre recorded earlier today--let's start The Ranger Ryan Show.

The Tonight Show | Conan Conflict
As you may recall, Leno had retired from The Tonight Show and moved on to his own NBC primetime series, The Jay Leno Show, in Sept. 2009. But when it failed to catch on in its 10 p.m. time slot, the network announced in January 2010 that it would shorten The Jay Leno Show to a half-hour, and move it to 11:35 p.m—the time slot The Tonight Show had held for nearly 60 years. O'Brien's Tonight Show would therefore have been pushed back to 12:05 a.m., which was effectively the time slot O'Brien had been keeping warm on Late Night with Conan O'Brien for 16 years. "I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it," O'Brien said in a statement. "But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with The Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more." Unfortunately, NBC would not budge, so O'Brien decided to say goodbye to The Tonight Show. On Jan. 22, 2010, as the Tonight Show band played a rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird," O'Brien signed off, making his stint as host the shortest of all time. Seeing as O'Brien has been killing it for years with his late-night TBS show, Conan, it's hard to believe that just 10 years ago, he was dealing with what Entertainment Weekly deemed the biggest "late-night disaster" of all time.

Folgers | Coming Home
The Best Part of Waking Up is from the nightmare this ad started on the internet. Can you imagine having a goal where you want to make this innocent wholesome holiday inspired coffee commercial and it turns into a decades long incest joke? How did this happen? Why did this happen? Because the looks those two siblings give one another leads us to believe... weird things. We know these are actors! We just question why that look... Why do you want your brother as a gift for Christmas? What's in the box??? So many questions... Let's make up some answers.

Snickers | Get Some Nuts
Laurence Tureaud is a National Treasure, he is at the same level of Dolly Parton for me, and he led a campaign as a spokesperson to promote masculinity...for a candy bar. He is known for his roles as B. A. Baracus in the 1980s television series The A-Team and as boxer Clubber Lang in the 1982 film Rocky III. He is also known for his distinctive hairstyle inspired by Mandinka warriors in West Africa, his copious gold jewelry, his tough-guy persona and his catchphrase "I pity the fool!", first uttered as Clubber Lang in Rocky III, then turned into a trademark used in slogans or titles, like the reality show I Pity the Fool in 2006. You may know him as Mr. T, I know him as the epitamy of cool, let's talk about candy bars and manliness on this episode of The Ranger Ryan Show.

Lifelock | Identity Advertising
Alright I need to be honest, a lot of these episodes are dealing with products that I have either used or currently used. This episode is no exception. If you decide to put your private information on a billboard, the odds are not in your favor that something won't happen as a result. This may have been a courageous ad campaign but it led to a pretty substantial financial hit. Let's talk about my choice in identity theft protection, today on the Ranger Ryan Show.

Snapple | World Breaking Records
In 2005, Snapple attempted something big... but things didn't work out. We will be talking about not only that epic fail but the success of Snaple simple yet brilliant ad campaigns. It actually took me two minutes of research to remember the 'Snapple Lady' and that will be the commercial we will be watching together, this should be a nice little trip down memory lane. So let's dicuss the rise and fall of Snaple, on todays episode of the Ranger Ryan Show.

Acclaim | Fame to Shame
The worst year in the companies history was in 2004, we will discuss all the poor decisions that led up to then and where they went wrong. The company that went all out for marketing, usually being sued or stopped by the government each time, finally closes its doors. Whether you played Turok, Virtua Tennis, or Shadow Man--you can't help but be shocked at all the marketing techniques attempted by one company. If you have not heard of Acclaim, perhaps you have heard of some of their ports ofr console from Midway; such as Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam. This was a company that was on a path to something great, but bad decisions can lead to the downfall of any company--let's go over some of those mistakes, on this episode of the Ranger Ryan Show.

Red Lobster | Crab, Butter, & Biscuits
Okay, I am not going to lie... This episode is making me hungry. I used to be a big fan and supporter of Red Lobster. I couldn't tell you how many times I have been there--it was fancy without being too expensive. They changed their look over the years and it has become a lot more casual but the food is not as good as it used to be. This episode focuses on a very large mistake that had a big financial impact on the once great Red Lobster. So put on your plastic bibs and let's dive in to this discussion, on this episode of the Ranger Ryan Show.
