If you have an interest in designing board games I highly recommend this “documentary style” podcast. It is an honest look as all aspects of the hobby. The co-hosts’ range of experiences keep the show fresh and interesting as they discuss their challenges, successes and progress in the design world. Definitely a podcast worth checking out! (501 is a great jumping off point for new listeners)

Really love the new direction the show has gone in the last few episodes and by last few episodes, I mean the last episode, number 350 hosted by Matt & Josh. Very professional and great game design talks.

This show is a fantastic look into game design and concept development from two gents who are genuinely fun to listen to. They blend the right mix of tabletop gaming with other fun topics and present a fun and refreshing look into game design and development. After just a few episodes I was hooked and now Jason and Rob feel just like brothers. Well maybe distant cousins. OK, more like old friends you try and dodge when you see them at the mall. Thanks guys for such a great show and here’s to many more to come!

I just started the podcast and I am only to mid-2013 and slowly working my way up to date. Guys are fun and easy to listen to. If you start in the middle the podcast list, the shows will seem LONG. Listen to a handful of shows to get some background knowledge and then the shows seem to be a perfect length. I wish the first 15ish shows were on iTunes app, but it wasn't too bad to go online to listen to them. Thanks guys! I'm looking forward to see how the games turn out.

I look forward to this show every week. It's such a good way to start my Mondays. Rob and Jason are funny and professional and personable. I feel like I know them now and look forward to meet them at a convention at some point. The show if consistently good and I particularly enjoy the pitches. It's great to hear the creative process of other game designers!

While the topics may not initially seem interesting, the guys always make the discussion interesting and engaging. By the end of the topic discussion I'm deeply interested in the content and can't help but apply that to my current designs. I also love hearing about their current games and how they're progressing. The "documentary" style design podcast was iffy for me at first, but I love it now. Great show guys!

The Practicing The Pitch segment of this podcast is my favorite part of any board game podcast. These guys force themselves to pitch a new game every week, but then they add to, tweak, & mangle the ideas they just pitched. We get to listen in on the actual act of creation. Hearing this always spurs new ideas in me. Several times while listening in the car I've had to pull over & pause the podcast so I could start writing down my own ideas. Good stuff.

Jason and Rob have some of the most inspiring conversations about game design. As an amateur designer, I looked for a long time for resources that feel helpful. THIS ONE IS THAT AND THEN SOME! Thanks for what you guys do.

Of the 25 or so board game podcasts I listen to, this one is my favorite. It's a brainstorming session that is inspiring and full of good ideas. It's a must listen. Thanks guys.

TC Petty III made my favorite game Vivajava, which is published by Dice Hate Me, who does the State of Games podcast, where I heard about the podcast Something from Nothing, that is hosted by Rob, Jason and TC Petty III, and that has almost nothing to do with the greatness of this podcast. Even if you are not into designing board games Rob and Jason entertain every week with their playful banter and minimal preparedness. Always a good listen I recently completed listening to every episode starting with 1.

This is for anyone who loves playing, thinking about and designing board and card games. From the beginning, this show has had a solid format where the guys discuss games they’ve been playing, a feature of the week section in which they discuss a mechanic/mechanism or element found in existing games and a practicing the pitch segment in which someone will pitch an idea for a new game. The discussions are interesting for anyone who likes to think about how games work, what makes for a good or bad game and how to make a game idea better. This is a podcast to savor. It gets better with every episode because each adds more to the conversation about games. If you want to hear about other games you should be looking to add to your collection – the Watcha Been Playing section will give you some direction. The Mechanic/Feature of the week section is always an interesting discussion, spotlighting a particular game element. The Practicing the Pitch section is a good exercise. Some pitches that seemed strong in Rob or Jason’s head are revealed to be weaker while others that seem like a joke at first take on new life through the discussion. The best way to have a good idea is by having lots of ideas and choosing the good ones. Jason and Rob come up with a lot of good ideas by continually putting themselves out there. This is a great documentary of the collaborative creative process. (And there are a lot of laughs here!)

This is one of few podcasts I make time for every week. They have a lot of great insight for indie tabletop game designers and are both likable and promote an excellent community!

I recently have been looking to turn my game design hobby into something a little more, by actually bringing it to a storefront (even if just digital). I was searching around for a good board game podcast for someone like me. This is absolutely the best podcast I’ve run into. Many I listened to were just centered on news of board games. Some were just interviews with developers, which are nice. This one however looks directly at the aspects of game creation, balance, prototyping, play testing, and so much more. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in making their own games. The pitches, and talk of game updates have given me more inspiration to keep building and thinking of new ideas. Keep up the fantastic work guys. You’re one of the best shows out there on the game building subject.

In this podcast two game designers make rules for board games in a breezy conversation that never takes itself too seriously. Always entertaining and some ideas are even keepers.

A pretty entertaining take on the process of becoming a game designer. It has a nice informal format with some good segments where they talk about what they've been playing, a Feature of the Week, and Practicing the Pitch. While some pitches may fall flat, I find myself thinking about some of their games long after the podcast has ended. I'm now going back and listening to the original episodes to get a full sense of their journey. Fun stuff!

I like the free association about each others games. I would like to "pitch" the idea of an aspiring designer being on your show. That person is Chris Hammond. Keep up the fun!

A unique boardgame podcast. Great discussion about game mechanics and pitching new games, which leads to good discussion about those pitched games.

Building the Game provides great insight into the design process. Budding designers should follow Rob and Jason and see what it takes to publish a quality board game.

I listen to a lot of podcasts and this one is my favorite. I love the thoughtfulness of it, the way you can drift off during an episode because of something that was said and have to rewind a bit to get back to where you were. Rob and Jason are likable, affable, thoughtful, and passionate. And they like beer! Intended to be a documentary on the experiences of first-time game designers coming up with ideas for games, it plays more like experienced game designers gracefully crafting games. The speed at which they initiate, nurture, and refine game ideas is incredible. I find myself excited to one day play any of their games. Shows are split into segments and each one is interesting and unique. You can learn what games they are playing and hear them explain what they like about each one and critique the games' drawbacks. A game mechanic is presented each week that typically brings up countless examples and possible improved implementations. The most exciting part is when they pitch their game ideas. Rob and Jason are natural counterparts and the desire for simplicity in one of them is balanced by a desire for complexity in the other. With almost no friction, the good idea of one becomes a great idea after they've both weighed in on it. After listening to an episode, I find myself inspired; not to create a board game, necessarily, but to be as passionate about the choices I make in my life and to surround myself with people who can make my good ideas great.

Great intro music and the guys know what they are talking about. You can tell they love games. Their show has a great conversational vibe to it. Its like you are having lunch with good friends. Great concept to document the creative process of creating a game, starting with just the first seed of an idea. I haven't really heard that as the premise of a podcast show before. Its going to be fun to hear what happens
