The Title Says It All
I think the criticisms about the show/interviews being interrupted (ruined) by the host, Eve Ewing, are unfair. Full disclosure, I love Eve Ewing’s work. This is no exception, as I think she does an amazing job here. And even if you don’t, her part as the host is important to the show. The title of the podcast is “Bughouse Square with Eve Ewing.” Y’all! Her name is half of the title. Of course she will be a prominent voice on the podcast. The other half of the title is explained in the beginning episode & in various descriptions online, & it refers to a free speech park where Studs Terkel once “encountered the kind of lively public debate that inspired his oral history books and radio work.” So the show is one part revisiting what Studs Terkel & his guests discussed & one part connecting those discussions to the present day & the contemporary guests Ewing interviews. Ewing gives context to & connects the former & the current guests’ work. She does it well too! For those looking for uninterrupted Studs Terkel recordings, those exist, just not here (there’s links in the episode details to the full interviews with transcripts). That’s not the point of this podcast.

Gilding the lily
I found it somewhat tedious / disorienting to switch between the original interview and the commentary. Would greatly prefer the unabridged interviews

Not enough Terkel Too much Ewing
Constant interruption of Terkel to explain the obvious It is misdescribed

So amazing! Can't wait for more episodes. Love the pairing of the older Studs Terkel interviews with a contemporary voice. A real pleasure to listen to.

Expanding my book list
I love this podcast as its given me a slew of new readings, new perspective on old, and overall I'm really enjoying how Eve ties in aspects of the interviews to the world we live in today because a lot of those interviews, stories etc. are still alive and relevant in different people. Keep up the great work Eve!

Terrible
I've long looked forward to the day when Studs Terkel's show would be available as a podcast. Unfortunately, Bughouse Square took Studs' classic, brilliant interviews and ruined them. Instead of making Studs' show available in its unedited version, Bughouse Square consists of Eve Ewing interjecting herself into strangely edited versions of Studs' show at every opportunity. She tacks on her own unnecessary and interminable intro that adds nothing but tedium. Then bizarrely, Ewing actually interrupts the flow of Terkel's interview to insert her own commentary in the most jarring way. Ewing's annoying interruptions totally break the spell of losing oneself in the conversation that Studs masterfully orchestrated. Please lose Ewing and publish the unedited versions of Studs' show without any commentary! Listening to Bughouse Squarein its current form is like looking at the Mona Lisa after somebody's come along with crayons and drawn their own pictures all over it. Extremely disappointed.

Eve brought. Studs’s guests kept me.
I was attracted because I’m interested in Eve as she starts to write my favorite super hero, Ironheart, so I was pleasantly surprised I could learn more about her through this podcast. Baldwin being on the first episode also drew me in and Silverstein, that familiar, nostalgic name, also intrigued me and taught me more about him than I ever knew. Can’t wait to see the other guests.

What a Terrific Idea!
I was pleased to stumble upon this show via the host’s Twitter feed. I love the idea of revisiting decades-old Studs Terkel interviews and adding relevant current analysis. In some ways nothing has changed; in other ways we seem light years away. Eve Ewing does a phenomenal job of working with the material. I’m impressed with her ability to be at times light-hearted and at times very serious. The show is very listenable. Oh... and I envy her for getting access to the Terkel archives in order to do this. I look forward to more episodes.
