Bill C-22, the **Lawful Access Act**, would allow police and CSIS to confirm, without a warrant, whether you're a customer of a specific telecommunications provider. It would also allow regulations requiring certain providers to retain metadata for up to one year and prohibit companies from notifying customers in many circumstances. This isn't the first attempt at this legislation. Much of the framework previously appeared in Bill C-2 before being removed and reintroduced as Bill C-22.For this episode, I read the legislation itself, the federal government's Charter Statement, official government background documents, and analysis from legal experts, privacy advocates, and technology lawyers. Don't take my word for it. Read the sources and decide for yourself.Further reading and primary sourcesParliament of Canada: Bill C-22 (Lawful Access Act)Full text of the legislation as introduced in Parliament.https://www.parl.ca/documentviewer/en/45-1/bill/C-22/first-reading**Parliament of Canada: LEGISinfo, Bill C-22**Official legislative tracker showing the bill's progress, amendments, debates, and votes.https://www.parl.ca/legisinfo/en/bill/45-1/c-22**Department of Justice Canada: Charter Statement for Bill C-22**The government's explanation of how it believes the bill aligns with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/csj-sjc/pl/charter-charte/c22_2.html**Public Safety Canada: Supporting Authorized Access to Information Act**Government backgrounder explaining the objectives and key provisions behind the lawful access portion of Bill C-22.https://www.canada.ca/en/public-safety-canada/news/2026/03/backgrounder--securing-access-to-information-in-bill-c-22.html**Fasken: Bill C-22 Reintroduces Lawful Access**A legal analysis explaining what changed from previous legislation, what the bill would require of telecommunications companies, and the practical implications for businesses.https://www.fasken.com/en/knowledge/2026/03/the-government-of-canada-introduces-bill-c22**Electronic Frontier Foundation: "Canada's Bill C-22 Is a Repackaged Version of Last Year's Surveillance Nightmare"**An analysis examining the bill's surveillance powers, privacy implications, and judicial oversight.**Canada's National Observer: Bill C-22 Privacy Coverage**Reporting on the reaction from privacy experts, civil liberties organizations, and legal scholars following the bill's introduction.**Michael Geist for The Hub: Bill C-22 Analysis**Technology law professor Michael Geist discusses the bill's impact on privacy, encryption, telecommunications providers, and Canada's digital policy.**Background: Bill C-12, Strengthening Canada's Immigration System and Borders Act**Provides context on how the border and immigration provisions from the former Bill C-2 continued separately after the lawful access provisions were removed.Buy me a coffee! - https://buymeacoffee.com/kelsisherenLet's connect!Rumble - https://rumble.com/user/TheKelsiSherenPerspectiveInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/thekelsisherenperspective?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw%3D%3DX: https://x.com/KelsisherenSubstack: https://substack.com/@kelsisherenSUPPORT OUR PEOPLE - - - - - - - - - - - -MasterPeace - 10% off with code KELSI - https://www.MasterPeace.Health/KelsiKetone IQ- 30% off with code KELSI - https://ketone.com/KELSIGood Livin - 20% off with code KELSI - https://www.itsgoodlivin.com/?ref=KELSIBrass & Unity - 20% off with code UNITY - http://www.brassandunity.com
