National Treasure - person versus place
Absolutely riveting discussion about why America has no National Treasures. Thank you Jim and JB! Can’t wait for the next one. I could listen to this all day.
Unlike the UK, which informally elevates figures like David Attenborough or Judi Dench into “national treasures” through longevity, steadiness, and broad cross-generational affection, the United States struggles to create similar universally embraced figures because of its size, cultural fragmentation, and political polarization. In America, nearly every public figure becomes associated with a tribe, which makes consensus admiration difficult. Those who come closest — people like Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, or even Taylor Swift — tend to share certain traits: decades of cultural contribution, emotional impact across generations, relative personal steadiness, and an identity that feels foundational rather than partisan. It isn’t about being boring so much as being enduring, non-threatening, and woven into the country’s shared memory.
