South Africa is a deeply divided society, where racial lines still colour people's lives. The Dutch ruled South Africa for nearly two centuries. Their legacy was apartheid, which was birthed by the Dutch Reformed Church. A dutch language bible was heavily relied upon until an Afrikaans translation was published in the 1930's. So when a family bible, containing the God-breathed word translated into Dutch, emerged within a coloured family, apartheid's ghosts must have been incandescent! Such a bible appeared suddenly in my family about 10 years ago. It is a rare keepsake which seems to confirm assumptions about an Afrikaans or Dutch Progenitor. Most South African coloured families can only be traced back to about four generations, with the European and Native/Slave ancestors the stuff of legend. This podcast promises to take you on a journey to discover, not only the past and the present, but also the future.
