A word of God’s angel. “Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son . . .” (Lk 1:36). Mary knew how to listen to God. Be careful: it was not merely “hearing” a superficial word, but it was “listening,” that consists of attention, acceptance and availability to God. The Word of God is the Logos (Jn 1:1-18) - a Person, not a book. Creation is a "book of God's words" brought forth through the wisdom and Person of the Logos. Now, in the spiritual new creation, the Logos gives Himself to us as "seed" and "food" in Scripture and Eucharist, which together are the "one table of the Lord" (CCC 103). "Salvation" is not merely a moment of asking Jesus into your heart, at least not according to the Bible. Jesus never said to anyone who asked about salvation, "Ask me into your heart and you will be saved." But He did say, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:53-54). Greek words have motion: I was saved> I am being saved> I will be saved. Salvation begins with baptism, and proceeds along a path of exodus, of healing, of restoration, of transformation. Salvation is only finished at the end, in Him. He is our peace, shalom, rest. "Rules" are not righteousness. Rules often become the symbol for righteousness rather than the road to it. Is "righteousness" about keeping rules? What is "sin" anyway? Before we can truly become "little," we must confront the Pharisee in ourselves. Pharisaism is religious narcissism. The Bible calls it "insolent pride."  The label "narcissist" is widely deployed to refer to people who appear to be too full of themselves, but the truth is, we all have selfish, narcissistic tendencies to some degree that we must wrestle with. I believe this "spirit of judgment" is the main wound of the Fall. Jesus' most dire warnings and strongest words were for the blind Pharisees. . Clinically, narcissism is a spectrum, and there are three "types" that give us useful information on how to deal with it in ourselves and others. Ultimately, Paul says we must "come out!" and unto our Heavenly Father in order to heal this father wound. . The point in "healing the inner child" is illustrated and affirmed by an ancient psychological/mythological idea that the way to full maturity is to find what you lost as a child and regain it. The recovery of the child revivifies the adult by teaching the adult how to play, trust, and wonder without judgment again, but with the added maturity and knowledge of being an adult who knows how to organize and protect oneself in the world. The inner child finally gets to express him/herself from a place of safety rather than fear and danger.
