Making “Spain's Unfinished History” is the focus of our latest episode of The Beyond Borders Podcast. This is the story behind the documentary, told by the team that made it.From a Friday conversion ceremony in the shadow of the Alhambra to 1,300-year-old Islamic water systems being restored to fight Spain's climate crisis, the Beyond Borders team reflects on the communities keeping Al-Andalus alive, and the far-right VOX party trying to erase it from Spanish schools.Spain spent centuries trying to erase the legacy of Al-Andalus. But as the team discovered, history has a way of resurfacing through music, politics, and even the water flowing down the mountains.Email us: [email protected] has a story. Hosted on Acast. This time on The Beyond Borders Podcast, we go behind the story of Sweden's Child Killers: Victims or Criminals? - the documentary that asks how Sweden's gangs turned children into contract killers, and whether anyone can stop them. This is what it was actually like on the ground. From a murder scene we arrived at less than 24 hours after a teenager was shot dead outside his home, to a police weapons cache holding 27,000 seized items including grenades, assault rifles, and 3D printed handguns.Among those we meet are three alleged gang members who agreed to only talk to us in a cold basement. All three had a casualness about violence and criminal behaviour that was difficult to reconcile with how young they were.We also go inside a community centre that makes a simple argument: £200,000 a year to keep kids off the street, or £700,000 a year to keep one person behind bars. The maths isn't complicated. And we ask why it's the children of immigrants, not the first generation, who are most at risk of being recruited.Sweden calls it a national emergency. The age of criminal responsibility has just been lowered to 13. But few think that’s the answer. The story behind the story.Watch the full documentary here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB0uNP1enCA&t=212s Hosts: Adam Charlton, David Foster, Vivienne DacreExecutive Producer: Alice TeggEditor: Emine Gezici Ustundag ----From neighbours living with the threat of war between NATO and Russia on their doorstep, to breakaway micro nations, repentant child soldiers, and rat-catchers risking their lives - you can find our entire back-catalogue here:https://www.youtube.com/@BeyondBordersTRTWorld Hosted on Acast. Denmark is one of the happiest places on earth. So why is its government forcing thousands of people out of their homes on account of where they live and who they are?Adam Charlton and David Foster go inside Denmark's controversial "Parallel Societies" policy - a social experiment that's demolished neighbourhoods and broken up communities. Now it’s being legally challenged as potentially unlawful racial discrimination. They meet the residents left behind in near-empty tower blocks, the lawyer fighting to bring the whole thing down, and the activists who took 50,000 signatures to Parliament, only to be ignored. The Danish government calls it integration. The people living through it call it discrimination. What happens when the state decides your community is the problem? Watch the full documentary, "Ghetto Blasted: Integration or Discrimination?" and tell us: is this pioneering social policy, or state-sanctioned discrimination? For generations Europe’s oldest living culture was told to be ashamed. Its language silenced, its identity suffocated. Now a new fight is unfolding in the Arctic. Not against the past but over progress, and the use of traditionally Sami territory for Europe’s clean energy goals. But this time the struggle isn’t just against the government, it comes from within, and the unspoken power-struggle inside the Sami hierarchy.Watch the full programme here: https://youtu.be/d2tPbbE3AHQ?si=3aMppGSzmW2nnx_h Hosts: Adam Charlton, Caoimhe Louise Willemoes and Nathalie Kantaris DiazShow Producers: Caoimhe Louise Willemoes, Nathalie Kantaris Diaz, and Vivienne DacreExecutive Producer: Alice TeggPodcast Editor: Vivienne Dacre, Emine Gezici Ustundag From communities living with the threat of war between NATO and Russia on their doorstep, to Sri Lanka’s repentant former child soldiers, to the New York rat-catchers risking their lives - you can watch our entire back-catalogue of shows here: https://www.youtube.com/@BeyondBordersTRTWorld Hosted on Acast. Welcome to Liberland, the self-declared micronation in the heart of Europe, that claims to be building a new country from scratch. Sold as a tax-free utopia with no government interference and a crypto-powered economy, Liberland has attracted libertarians, adventurers, and digital nomads from around the world. But is this bold experiment in freedom a genuine blueprint for the future of nation-building, or an elaborate illusion built on disputed land that it may never legally control? Beyond Borders investigates the vision, the politics, the believers, and the controversy behind one of the world’s most ambitious and polarising attempts to create a new country. Welcome to Europe’s most closely watched town.High above the Arctic Circle, on the Norwegian border with Russia, is a place where some say the Cold War never ended. Where a memorial to the Soviet soldiers who defeated the Nazis has a darker meaning since Russia invaded Ukraine. And where those trying to report what’s happening have been targeted by Moscow’s spy network. This is a community living with the threat of war between NATO and Russia, and the suspicion that hangs over everyone.Watch the full episode here: https://youtu.be/plLNV1bYQts CreditsHosts: Adam Charlton, Caoimhe Willemoes & Nathalie Kantaris DiazShow Producers: Caoimhe Willemoes & Nathalie Kantaris DiazExecutive Producer: Alice TeggPodcast Editor: Caoimhe WillemoesFrom Sri Lanka’s former child soldiers, to Greenlandic inuits fighting for justice, and New York’s rat-catchers risking their lives - you can watch our entire back-catalogue of shows here:https://www.youtube.com/@BeyondBordersTRTWorldGet in touch:[email protected] Hosted on Acast. Land remains one of South Africa’s most divisive issues. Thirty years after apartheid, communities still clash over race and space. From Orania’s whites-only enclave to calls for redistribution, Beyond Borders explores the voices shaping this struggle - white farmers fearing displacement, black farmers building new futures, Khoi and San reclaiming ancestral land, and families returning to homes lost under apartheid. From Cape Town to the Kalahari, we investigate how history, identity, and politics collide in the fight for South Africa’s soil.Hosts: David Foster & Adam CharltonShow Producer: Connor McLaughlinExecutive Producer: Alice TeggPodcast Editor: Nathalie Kantaris DiazWatch the full episode here: https://youtu.be/sx0P8WuICCQFrom Sri Lanka’s former child soldiers, to Greenlandic inuits fighting for justice, and New York’s rat-catchers risking their lives - you can watch our entire back-catalogue of shows here:https://www.youtube.com/@BeyondBordersTRTWorld Hosted on Acast. This is a story 200 years in the making - a recreation of Charles Darwin's famous voyage of discovery. Beyond Borders is in South Africa to meet the young scientists assembled from all over the world trying to save the planet, and the creatures we share it with. From reintroducing injured penguins to the wild, to stemming the spread of rabies in seals, and emergency operations on giant injured turtles - this is an evolution of the understanding about our precious, natural world.Hosts: David Foster & Adam CharltonProducer: Connor McLaughlinExecutive Producer: Alice TeggPodcast Editor: Emine Gezici UstundagWatch the full episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIJSWfHVXaE&t=781sFrom Sri Lanka’s former child soldiers, to Greenlandic inuits fighting for justice, and New York’s rat-catchers risking their lives - you can watch our entire back-catalogue of shows here:https://www.youtube.com/@BeyondBordersTRTWorld Hosted on Acast.
