After placing an advertisement for a partner to join him as a time-traveler, three journalists can't resist checking out his story, to find out which he is. It’s from this that Darius forms a relationship with Kenneth to see what he’s really up to… but once she crosses the line there’s no going back (which is a curious thing for someone considering time-travel). So you see this advertisement in the local paper – some-one needs a partner to travel through time? Ok, so they're likely to be a nutcase but even so it’s going to be an adventure right..? Professor Patterson has a choice to make, to risk losing all that is close to him from his reputation to his family, or to face his actions and expose the Brotherhood! Our lives are surrounded by organizations, from the workplace to masonic temples. You made it real, you can make it unreal.” Sealed into an isolation chamber Eddie Jessop shuts himself off from the world. With nothing but his mind to distract him he searches to find if ‘God’ really exists. Yet this is not enough for Eddie – He wants to ‘touch his creator’... When we dream is our mind simply piecing together random events or are there meanings behind the images? Is hallucination a dreamlike state that we can have whilst being fully conscious? If our minds literally create ‘reality’, as some scientists suggest, then perhaps dreams open the doorway to the ‘creator’. But just who are these ‘people’? ‘They Live’ pulls the curtain back, exposing our puppeteers and the methods they use to control us. Just how much are we really in control of our lives..? You are a consumer. You buy to eat and work to buy, but have you stopped to wonder just how much choice you really have? What if everything you did was controlled? What if you are controlled? To many ‘They Live’ will seem little more than an average ‘sci-fi’ film. Through stunning visuals and dark corridors ‘Prometheus’ explores the notion of creation and the creator. But are we wise to search out our God and how far you would go to find ‘him’? Travelling to a distant planet, a mixed group of Wayland Corporation employees go to find life… Alien life. Written as a prequel to the 1979 blockbuster, Ridley Scott has returned once again to direct another chapter in the ‘Alien’ saga. Taking influences from real alternative history’s we are shown our ‘engineers’ and prompted to question our faith. Is the search ‘out there’ an excuse to avoid looking ‘within’? Catfish (2010) “It takes somebody that appreciates the art…” A photographer from New York, is flattered when a gifted child hundreds of miles away begins to paint his work. With his filmmaking friends a documentary of their relationship is born and we join them on their journey as he is also attracted to Megan, the elder sister. Yet all is not what it seems and we soon learn Megan is far from who she claims to be… Who do we give our trust to? How much of our online life is genuine? In our ‘modern’ age we are so plugged in to our virtual lives that we rarely take time to consider the face behind the profile. What if the person you thought was your friend, was really paid to monitor your behavior? Could you tell if a person was pretending to be of the opposite sex? In ‘The Great Dictator’ Charlie Chaplin plays both a Jewish barber and Hynkel (a parody of Hitler). Released during the 2nd World War this film is as poignant now as it was then. By turning tragedy to comedy harsh realities fly past your eyes at an alarming rate – together with an ending speech that is a true classic. Charlie Chaplin: One of the world’s greatest clowns. Beginning with a tragic and poverty led childhood to a life where figureheads (from Churchill to Einstein) jostled to be seen next to him. An entertainer recognised globally, but one whose ‘political’ viewpoint led to him being exiled from the country that made him famous. A man born in the19th century, with a message for the 21st. Surrogates (2009) “We're not meant to experience the world through a machine.” The world is a ‘safer’ place when we live our lives through the eyes of machines. Or at least that’s what the people believe in ‘Surrogates’. Until, that is, a weapon is used that kills not only the machine but its user too. Would you choose a virtual life over your real one? Set in the near future perhaps the idea doesn’t seem so strange if we consider the use of social networks and video games today. To live ‘free’ from disease and with a body ‘designed’ the way you choose. Be beautiful and eternally young through your Surrogate – but at what cost? The Avengers / Avengers Assemble (2012) “I still believe in heroes.” Building upon a series of successful Marvel superhero movies, The Avengers / Avengers Assemble brings together an unlikely group of ‘heroes’ and unites them against a common enemy. With so many egos at play this film could have easily fallen apart, yet it not only sticks together but forms a great action film… but what it is really telling us? In times of trouble people flock to entertainment, as a release from the harsh realities around them. Is this part of the reason that ‘Avengers Assemble’ total worldwide earnings have already exceeded $1Billion. Eyes Wide Shut (1999) “Please, step forward.  May I have the password?” Dr ‘Bill’ Harford (Tom Cruise) is rich, successful and married to the beautiful Alice (Nicole Kidman). Yet with his last film, Stanley Kubrick shows us how thin the veneer is within this ‘perfect life’. Using sexual tension to draw us in we are exposed to the couple’s secret worlds away from prying eyes. With one veil being seductively removed after another we follow the Doctor along the path until we suddenly find ourselves lost and alone, in a dark and far more sinister place. Is this purely a work of fiction or was the Director, as some have said, showing us through the looking glass to a hidden society that exists within the shadows of our own?
