In this episode, Suzi talks about how a person oftentimes can be trained to take care of others before oneself at a young age, but this can be an unsafe practice. It's kind of like thinking you can rescue other people if they fall into the deep end, but you can't swim. And yet you're the first one that jumps in the pool. Working with combat veterans, Suzi has become familiar with the super power to want to rescue others, to want to make sure that others are safe and even sacrifice oneself for others.
Self awareness is not selfish! Ask yourself: Can I emotionally regulate! Can I make sure that my feelings are not so out of control that I'm actually adding to the danger and the wellbeing of myself and others? Can I physically manage my fear and sadness so that it doesn't turn into anger because once it turns into anger, then it's much harder to be able to make rational, safe decisions.
Learn to act your way into the right feelings, not feel your way into the right action!
The idea that we have to act ourselves into right thinking and right feeling is a daily practice. So for example, if you don't yell, then you are literally helping your brain, body, mental and emotional wellbeing. Taking care of yourself even if the people in front of you are incapable of doing the same.
Listen in to the whole podcast to learn and put into your daily practices how to rescue yourself before you can rescue someone else.
Suzi's challenge: Have the courage to talk about what happened and how it affected you!
You deserve to heal and be the person you want to be and create the life you want to live.
