Helpfully Hoping – Believing & Doing
For more than 3 decades, I’ve helped businesses, governments, non-profits, and communities take their next step in clean energy transformations that reduce carbon footprints and save money. The goal of the AWESome EarthKind Podcast is to empower and energize YOU - so that, wherever you are on the clean energy spectrum, you can take your next step to a healthier & more sustainable future. We’re going to do something a bit different today.  Instead of an interview – I’m going to just give you my perspective on the human race – the good, the bad, and the ugly. The Fear. And what gives me hope. A lot of people have been telling me that they don’t think we’re going to make it. That their children don’t believe they have a future. That the world is literally going to hell. Today, you are I live on a planet that is being torn apart. In addition to the fear, anger and hatred being fueled by tribalism, ignorance, and social media - we are witnessing droughts, extreme heat, and wildfires that are literally burning down whole communities. At the same time, the increasing number and intensity of floods, Superstorms, and tornados batters our entire civilization from one side of the planet to the other. It’s now very clear that woman and mankind- all EARTHKIND – are another Force of Nature. And our collective power is fueling our impending destruction. You can check out the full interview here. We'd love to keep inspiring you towards the clear energy future we all deserve. https://awesomeearthkind.com/podcasts/helpfullyhoping

The Electric Vehicle Revolution - with Ariel Fan, Green Wealth
Quantum Quote: “Pressure makes diamonds.” – Ariel Fan Within the last 18 months, multiple companies have committed to become 100% carbon neutral by 2030, and entire industries are being galvanized. But we’re just at the beginning to scratch the surface of the most massive revolution in over 100 years. By 2035, no combustion vehicles will be sold in California or New York. Virtually every auto manufacturer - and many new ones - now have electric cars for sale. As one example, Ford invested over $10 Billion in electric vehicles, with the Mustang-E and F-150 Electric now on the market.  Do you know that there are 150,000 Level 2 charging ports across the US? These 220 volt chargers take 4-6 hours for an EV to be fully-charged. As the industry evolves, we are seeing more DC fast chargers (Level 3) like Tesla’s superchargers – which can charge a fully electric car to its full battery within the short period of 20-45 minutes. Starting in 2022 in California, NY City, and elsewhere, at least 10% of all new construction buildings’ parking stalls must be EV-charging-capable.  GreenWealth is making it possible by stacking rebates, grants and tax credits with customized charging and fleet programs for any type of business, non-profit, or government. Whoever you are, if you care about this mission, come and we will find a place for you! Check out this week’s AWESome EarthKind Energy podcast where we interview Ariel Fan. Ariel Fan is the Founder and CEO of GreenWealth Energy – the first woman, minority-owned business enterprise (WMBE) energy company certified for government and public procurement in California. Prior to founding GreenWealth, Ariel was recognized as Southern California Edison's Energy Efficiency Partner of the Year in 2016. As a female founder, she belongs to the 0.3% of all entrepreneurs and company owners in the clean energy space, and she’s “loud and proud” to represent small, diverse, and disadvantaged companies everywhere. Her experience made her realize that the public is actually confused by the idea of green building technologies and financial incentives; therefore, she has made it her mission to create easy pathways for building owners to save energy. GreenWealth Energy Solutions is partnered with ChargePoint – the largest EV charging manufacturer in the United States – in developing EV charging stations, specifically helping commercial and multi-family businesses and buildings transition to the clean energy future by deploying EV charging stations and getting incentives either in the form of utility rebates, state grants, or federal tax credits. GreenWealth has construction, design engineering, and rebate procurement capabilities all in one roof. If you are in business and you’re in clean energy, go to your elected officials to tell them what you think, because everyone is looking for advice right now. SuperNova #2. A lot of people are hesitant to think about lighting and solar because in their mind, these things are very expensive; it’s outside of their budget. Take the first step. Be brave and try. It’s really not that expensive and has outstanding returns on your investment. SuperNova #3. To all the women and young girls that are listening to this podcast - You have to step into your power and show up with the presence and authority you want. Focus on yourself and where you can develop to have that inner strength; it will flow into your organization and in the things that you want to do.   Worst Career Moment: “When I first started my company, I was 24 and I kept thinking in the back of my head all these negative worries. I also had family pressures then. Being Taiwanese-American, I had what daughters of immigrant families have - parents that prioritize stability and professional careers. I was afraid to go after the bigger contracts. For years, this hugely stepped on our growth. One year, I went to LightFair International, and for 10 minutes, nobody would talk to me. I was invisible.” – Ariel Fan Best Advice She’s Ever Received: “Whether you believe you can or you can’t, you’re right.” Personal Habit that Contributes to Success: “Supplements. Spirulina and Probiotics. Constant energy. Low caffeine; caffeinate only when necessary.” – Ariel Fan Internet Resource: The New York Times Book Recommendation: Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell Magic Wand: “Awareness of themselves; self-awareness. Everyone can no longer be ignorant of their effects on others, on the earth, and anything they do. They don’t have to change what they’re doing, but they just have to know their effect.” – Ariel Fan WTF or F: “I was there during hurricane Sandy. I was living at that time on 28th street and this was the line separating lower Manhattan to upper Manhattan. Everything 27th street and below was completely pitch dark. Sandy came in and for three or four days straight, we were in a lockdown. A lot of my friends going to college at that time had nowhere to live. There were people in Times Square charging their phones desperately to get a little bit of charge because all of the bottom of Manhattan had no electricity. It was such a surreal dystopian moment. The only light that you would see would be ambulances or police cars shining their light. It was pitch dark.” – Ariel Fan Most Energized About Today: “Building a hundred million dollar EV infrastructure company in the next five years. To take a company that was completely bootstrapped from my savings account and my credit card, and build it into a real organization that can help customers, and help not only the biggest customers but the tiny ones that nobody else wants to help, and build a culture of people who are committed to the mission – to being part of the biggest electrification event of our lifetimes and our kids’ lifetimes.” – Ariel Fan Next Step: “We’re in the process of raising funds.” – Ariel Fan Parting Advice: “Be the authentic you. Don’t be afraid to be who you are.” – Ariel Fan  Connect: Website: https://www.green-wealth.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/arielfanenergy Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/arielfanenergy/

Year 1 Review and Request for Feedback
Welcome, AWESome EarthKind People! Hi - I’m Ron Kamen - your host & clean energy guide. For more than 3 decades, I’ve helped businesses, governments, non-profits and communities take their next step in clean energy transformations that reduce carbon footprints and save money. AWESome EarthKind is here to empower and energize YOU - so that you can take your next step. We launched the AWESome EarthKind podcast a year ago on August 6th, 2020 –– the 75th anniversary of humanity’s destructive use of nuclear power on the people of Hiroshima, arguably the date that humanity became the 5th Force of Nature. Almost every day, extreme weather events demonstrate the incredible power of the 4 elements – the Air, Water , Earth, and Sun.  Our entire civilization is now at the tipping point. Weird and unpredictable weather has become the new normal. Wildfires, droughts, and extreme heat are affecting many people around the planet, while the increasing number and intensity of floods, Superstorms, and tornados regularly threaten just about everyone. To divert the catastrophic consequences of climate disruption, we MUST all come together and make the transition to clean energy. We started AWESome EarthKind to share the GOOD News that the AWESome Forces of Nature offer us thousands of times more energy than we need. We want to ensure that you - and everyone - understands the BETTER News - that human ingenuity and innovation are harnessing the 4 Elements and that we can now use this AWESome EarthKind Energy for all our electricity, heating, cooling, and transportation needs And we aim to spread the BEST News… that clean energy can save us money. YOU, me, and the 7 Billion people on the planet are now the 5th Element. Woman and Mankind - all “EarthKind” – are literally changing the world, and we all need to take the personal, professional and political actions that can stop and reverse the catastrophic impacts of climate disruption – and create a brighter, healthier, more just and prosperous civilization. AWESome EarthKind is for people who want to learn how to move to clean energy and save money when they make the transition. Over this past year, we’ve created episodes with leading policy and technology experts, construction professionals, and average homeowners who are working toward a clean energy future.   Awareness, Hope, & Opportunity of clean energy technologies Health Impacts and how clean energy technologies can reduce the risk of asthma & other respiratory illnesses Energy Efficiency & Clean Energy’s Big 3: Renewable Electricity, Clean Heating & Electric Vehicles The Business Voice & New Business Models that have created 3.4 Million American jobs – 3x more than those in the fossil fuel industry Environmental Justice and how clean energy “empowers the people that most need the work with the ability to do the work that most needs doing” Clean Energy Investments that provide superior returns while protecting & promoting your values   Starting your own Ecopreneur Business   The Basics of how to access clean energy technologies and save money Small Actions that make a big difference  Specific steps we can each take to reduce energy costs with solar electricity, clean heating, and electric cars Deep dives into utility and government incentives How to evaluate your unique situation, build a vision of where you’d like to be, and create a strategy that will reduce your energy costs, improve your family’s health, and create a proud legacy for your grandchildren How to generate additional income – or build your own clean energy business – without having to learn complex technologies - in the $13 TRILLION clean energy economy.   Over this past year, AWESome EarthKind Energy released weekly new podcast episodes with interviews of fascinating EarthKind people doing AWESome things with clean energy.  We’ve introduced you to individuals who are “walking the talk” and shared their SuperNova ideas to entertain, enlighten, and inspire you. You’ve heard what other homes, workplaces, and communities are doing to evolve to clean energy technologies, the challenges they faced, and the solutions they created. We’ve explained how LED lightbulbs are so much more efficient that regular incandescent lights because LEDs provide the same visible light - without wasting 90% of the energy creating heat. We’ve let you know that, wherever you live or work, you can have some type of renewable electricity. Even if you can’t put solar on your roof, there are other options on your property; additional ways to gain the benefits of solar in your community; and even options to purchase clean electricity from your utility or energy service company. We’ve enlightened you with the knowledge that your refrigerator is one type of heat pump - and how other types of heat pumps can you save money when you shift to clean heating & cooling in your home, school, and workplace.  We’ve examined air source heat pumps, which are simply air conditioners that both cool AND heat.  In the Power of Earth with Comfort by ClimateMaster series, we’ve conducted deep dives into ground source, or geothermal heat pumps - the most efficient forms of heating and cooling. We’ve shared how half the sun’s energy is stored in the ground beneath your feet – and how places like St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City installed a zero-emission, quiet, and comfortable geothermal system that was less expensive in upfront capital costs – and reduced their energy expenses by 30%  And how geothermal systems under the footprint of new and existing homes, multi-family dwellings, and office buildings are providing all the heating, cooling, and hot water for buildings as tall as 25 stories. Lastly, we’ve aimed to energize you with the ability to transition to your choice of over 50 Electric Vehicles that are Faster, Cheaper & more Reliable than gas cars, trucks & SUVs. Over this past year, Covid-19 has given everyone on Earth a massive wakeup call that reminds us that life is short, and fragile. Our lives, and the lives of all we love and everyone we know, now depend on our making the transition to clean energy.  Several years ago, I was privileged to see firsthand how we might transform a dark and hopeless situation into a bright future. When my wife was facing imminent death after a long battle with liver disease, she was saved by a Live Liver Transplant, and I discovered how the Liver is the body’s renewable organ. In her case, the combination of human will power, Nature’s incredible healing capabilities, and modern technology saved her life. Together, we are all now an AWESome Force of Nature. We ARE literally changing the world. The only question is – will we continue to fuel catastrophic climate change – or will we create the clean energy future we need to make the world safe for ourselves, our children, and all future generations? Thank you for joining with fellow AWESome EarthKind Energy people who are taking their next step to create a clean, safe, just, prosperous & sustainable future. Please go to our website, awesomeearthkind.com. Send us a message with your questions, comments, and ideas. Saving Energy through Practically Perfect Plumbing - with Pete Skinner
Quantum Quote: “We really can’t sit idly by. We’ve got to make the decisions. We’ve got to get things to change fast.” – Pete Skinner   Hot water costs can be up to 18% or 20% or more of a family’s home energy bill, and it can be an even larger percentage in a multi-family building. If you’re a developer of multifamily buildings, you strive to balance the first capital costs of construction, with on-going energy and maintenance costs - all while not compromising comfort for your tenants. Studies conducted in the last several years have found that we don’t use as much hot water as previously believed, and that simultaneous peak hot water consumption isn’t as high as estimated either. In most larger multifamily buildings, designers use three-inch diameter pipes that are costly to install and waste large amounts of energy. Sustainable “Net Zero”  buildings - such as the Net Zero Village http://www.netzerovillage.com/ and the Solara Luxury Apartments Solara https://www.solaraluxuryapartments.com/  - in Rotterdam, NY - have discovered that delivering hot water in a way that is fast and cost-effective - while saving a lot of energy in the process - is now possible!  Through Practically Perfect Plumbing (PPP), we can both save Earth while enjoying the pleasure of immediate hot water.  Check out this week’s AWESome EarthKind Energy podcast where we interview Pete Skinner, an Engineer who is dedicated to helping sustain the Earth with solar hot water, heat pumps  - and smaller “smart” pipes. Pete Skinner is a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineer who worked for 32 years as the Chief Scientist to the NY State Attorney General.  Pete first worked for Louis J. Lefkowitz in the state’s first environmental advocacy office. Pete led the NYAG’s technical team on pollution and power plant issues, and  sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on climate change, which led to the conclusion that carbon dioxide is the Earth’s most concerning pollutant. Pete has been interested in electricity and water processes since he was a kid. By  doing things by himself, he was able to differentiate what works and what doesn’t. This basically drove the passion he has now as he aims to reduce capital and energy costs in building new, high-performance net zero buildings. It is so important that we use these kinds of mechanisms to get the word out on important changes that are taking place, because our Earth is the only planet we have. If we don’t start addressing the energy issues that are driving this climate change really quickly and in a very deep way –– we’re not going to have a planet left. It’s all going to look like Mars. SuperNova #2.  The smaller the pipe, the less energy is being wasted. Practically Perfect Plumbing is a new way to get water to tenants that saves energy, saves money, saves water, and gets your tenants happier faster. SuperNova #3. You have to design so that if you find yourself with an odd demographic, you can adapt.  Most Energized About Today: “I’m energized today because I’m going to be meeting with my client, Dave, and selling him a heat pump hot water heater hybrid system for his new clubhouse – eight apartments with two bedrooms and two bathrooms – and his own apartment with a large jacuzzi tub.” – Pete Skinner Parting Advice: “Don’t be afraid to do it yourself. I think it’s driving home the fact that geothermal heat pumps are highly effective. They make use of available heat that’s already stored within the earth. They use 25 to 50% less electricity to run when compared to conventional heating and cooling systems. SuperNova #2. A great time to look into installing a new heat pump system is when your current heating and or cooling systems are coming to the end of their life, when you’re undergoing home renovations, or if you’re building new construction. SuperNova #3. Geothermal is really taking existing heat that is stored on the ground. It’s working less to serve well. Most Energized About Today: “I think it’s a really exciting time and New York State has very ambitious goals. National Grid is doing a lot to take responsibility for their portion of what they can control on reaching these goals. Climate change is essentially the greatest challenge that’s facing us all, and I’m happy to be involved and be working with this program across the state. I’m proud of it.” – Jenny Cross Parting Advice: “It doesn’t matter how slow you go, as long as you don’t stop. There’s a lot of work ahead of us, and we’ve got to take those small steps to get there. Just be proud of those small steps and don’t stop.” – Jenny Cross   Connect: Email address: [email protected] Facebook: www.facebook.com/nationalgridus Twitter: www.twitter.com/nationalgridus YouTube: www.youtobue.com/nationalgridus

The Best Solution for Sustainable Mobility - with Brandon Bartneck of FEV
Quantum Quote: “The obstacle is the way.” – Ryan Holiday 98% of American’s daily trips measure less than 50 miles.  Do you know that plugging in an electric vehicle into a normal 120V socket overnight can provide 200 miles of range? This means that most of us can wipe out our gasoline consumption and eliminate 40% of our total carbon footprints simply by switching to an electric car.  But however you move around - people will still have accidents, either dying or getting injured on their way.  And so even a transition to electric vehicles will not by itself create safe travel. How do we get to safe, sustainable, and equitable mobility solutions in the near future, both for humans’ sake and the environment? What are the best ways to clean up mobility and provide real solutions for a more sustainable future? Check out this week’s AWESome EarthKind Energy podcast, where we interview Brandon Bartneck, the Director of FEV North America’s New Business Development & Marketing sector. Brandon Bartneck aims to achieve his personal mission of developing a safer and more sustainable future through his work at FEV and his hosting of “The Future of Mobility” podcast. FEV is a leading global engineering service provider for sustainable energy and mobility solutions, supporting vehicle and propulsion system engineering in nearly all application segments. Brandon leads marketing activities in North America and helps drive the push into new application sectors and new technology areas. The Future of Mobility podcast he hosts is a weekly interview-style series highlighting the people and technology helping to develop and implement safe, sustainable, and equitable mobility solutions. His guests include leaders throughout the mobility sector. Brandon earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and is now living in the metro-Detroit area with his wife, son, and dog.   Sign up for a free webclass to discover how easy is it to get ultra-efficient geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home – without the pain of emptying your savings account.  In “The Power Of Earth With Comfort” From Climate Master webclass, you’ll discover the answers every homeowner needs to know, including: How geothermal heating and cooling can draw energy from the ground beneath our feet (for pennies) Why homeowners everywhere are making the switch The secrets to securing utility incentives and tax credits to pay for a large portion of your new geothermal system and much more…  If you are tired of rising energy costs and want to save up to 70% on your energy bills, Go to www.AWESomeEarthKind.com and register now for this FREE special event that will show you exactly how to get geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home.  We’d like to hear from you! When I had identified that spoken communication is a weak spot for me, and because I was so much into sales and marketing that I lost touch with technology and trends, the solution I came up with was starting this podcast which forced me to want to get better at speaking and dive in to these topics.” SuperNova #2. “Coming from an engineering background, it’s not something that is commonly understood that you’re talking to people who are in business positions and in decision-making positions, but even the potentially clearly black and white rational decisions are influenced by more than just what’s on the paper.”  SuperNova #3. “When I was playing quarterback. More than just my role, my job is to be a leader and an athlete on the field, not just being a rigid kind of fill in the blocks. When I think about my role now in the space, I certainly have responsibilities in the business space and marketing space, but I need to have an awareness and understanding that first and foremost, I’m representing myself and the company as someone who is trying to make an impact in this industry.”  Worst Career Moment: “We lost the first big opportunity to a competitor. That was a great experience that forced me to reflect and figure out where within my role are the weak spots and where I could improve what I’m doing. That led to one year of a really intense reflective process.” – Brandon Bartneck  Best Advice He’s Ever Received: “Be an athlete.” – Brandon Bartneck Personal Habit that Contributes to Success: “Reviewing and self-reflection; understanding what skills, attributes, perspective etc. required for a given situation scenario and trying to actively pursue and gain those skills.” – Brandon Bartneck Internet Resource: Seth Godin’s blog at https://seths.blog/  Book Recommendation: Meditations by Marcus Aurelius at https://www.amazon.com/Meditations-Marcus-Aurelius/dp/1503280462  Magic Wand: “Change all the ways that we’re moving people around, from your vehicle that’s sitting outside to everything else that is transporting stuff and make it something that’s not impacting the environment.” – Brandon Bartneck  WTF: “When I was living down in South Carolina, we had a hurricane come through which led to me leaving the town for what I call a hurrication up to the hills in South Carolina. I was able to spend some time hiking, watching football, etc. My wife, on the other hand, worked in a hospital as a nurse, so she was not able to leave with us and was in the hospital for 72 hours straight.” – Brandon Bartneck  Most Energized About Today: “I have a five-month old – my first child, and it really changes the perception of finding meaning in these problems. I think that really helps to energize and provide a level of purpose because I’m thinking now beyond my own life and beyond my own impact.” – Brandon Bartneck Next Step: “With FEV, I’m pretty excited that I have a global key account role, and I’m actually now transitioning and focusing on non-automotive sectors.” – Brandon Bartneck  Parting Advice: “If you’re trying to make an impact on the environment, especially in the mobility space, I urge you to keep an open mind and perspective. Good Night Gasoline- with Twyla Dell, Environmental Leader & Fuel Transition Historian
Quantum Quote:" From the early 20th-century author,  Ayn Rand - "You can evade reality, but you cannot evade the consequences of evading reality." - Twyla Dell   Every gallon of gasoline we burn creates ~20 pounds of carbon dioxide. Multiply times the number of gallons we consume every day, and you can understand why the atmosphere now has 50% more carbon dioxide than it did 100 years ago. No wonder it has accelerated global climate change and has fueled the more extreme weather conditions we are facing these days.   With what is happening now, do we continue to be in denial about the consequences of evading reality?   How can we do our part to lessen the use of gasoline - or even eliminate it altogether?   Nature has provided us with forces we can all use to have a cleaner environment and a better future for us all.   Why not look toward sustainable energy and find ways to make the most of it?    Twyla Dell is a published author, environmental leader, and a fuel transition historian. She has written five environmental books and is podcasting and blogging on reducing gasoline use. Twyla has a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from Antioch University and worked in public information for the EPA. She also lectured at business seminars across the United States and Canada, and created the Environmental Leadership Program for business and community leaders, teachers, and students.    Sign up for a free webclass to discover how easy it is to get ultra-efficient geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home – without the pain of emptying your savings account.   In “The Power Of Earth With Comfort” From Climate Master webclass, you’ll discover the answers every homeowner needs to know, including:   How geothermal heating and cooling can draw energy from the ground beneath our feet (for pennies)   Why homeowners everywhere are making the switch   The secrets to securing utility incentives and tax credits to pay for a large portion of your new geothermal system   and much more…   If you tired of rising energy costs and want to save up to 70% on your energy bills, Go to www.AWESomeEarthKind.com and register now for this FREE special event that will show you exactly how to get geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home.   We’d like to hear from you! It is something that we all do. And we can do something about it by using less gasoline. It's the biggest pollution that we do - Every gallon of gasoline we burn releases 20 pounds of carbon dioxide.   Supernova #2: I just wrote a blog called “the Edge of Tomorrow”. That's where we are. 12% to 15% into electric cars and solar power and everything else. We're beginning to scramble around huge business opportunities. There is also an awakening among the citizens to say, I can do something by burning less gasoline. I can stop burning gasoline; I don't have to put out the money for it and all the car repairs.   Supernova #3: Every time you drive about 3000 miles, you throw the weight of your car, that 3000-pound car, into the atmosphere. Looking at it, you drive 12,000 miles away a year, you've thrown 4 cars into the atmosphere. The atmosphere now has 50% more carbon dioxide than it did 100 years ago.    Worst career moment: Here's one, I'm still driving a Chrysler 2011 town car, and I only go to the grocery store and back. I just haven't decided what I'm going to do. I'm really waiting for the self-driving taxi service. And I know it will get to Kansas City in the next three or four years, and I will be out of the internal combustion business. - Twyla Dell    Aha! Moment: Discovering that gasoline was the culprit and the fact that it is such a well-kept secret that nobody talks about it to this moment. I am the only one - as far as I know -that tweets out these messages. We need to complain to the oil companies and stop failing to take responsibility for our power. We are customers. We are not addicts. We act like we're addicts. This is one of the major breakthroughs that I had. We're all addicted to oil out of necessity. We can realize that we don't have to be addicted. We can use less; we can use none. We can walk away; we can make this happen. This is going to be the biggest realization of individual and collective power that we've ever taken on. - Twyla Dell    Best Advice She's Ever Received: "When a door opens, walk through it." - Twyla Dell    Personal Habit that Contributes to Success: "I read voraciously. Man, you would hate to see the number of books that I order from Amazon, they love me." - Twyla Dell    Books Recommendation: Fueling Change: How We Created Climate Change One Fuel at a Time by Twyla Dell, Ph.D. , Goodnight Gasoline: How to Win the Climate Change Challenge Twyla Dell, Ph.D., The Gasoline Diet: Drive Less, Lose Pounds, Save the Planet by Twyla Dell, Ph.D.   Magic Wand: "Be nice to each other. Quit carrying on like savages. We really need to cooperate to make this come about. We're all on this together. There is no spare planet. We've got to make it work together." - Twyla Dell    WTF: "A bunch of friends and I went down to Yucatan over Easter vacation, and we ran out of money. We couldn't get back, so we took a fishing boat from Yucatan to Veracruz. We had to wade out in the moonlight to get into the rowboat and get on the boat. We got into a tremendous storm and we ran out of food. They caught some fish and we got fish heads for four days. Finally, we got to Veracruz. I had 20 pesos; it activated the telephone. We called that we're coming home. This man walked up to us and said, 'Would you like a ride up to Mexico City?' Because we didn't have any money, we said yes. That's how we got home." - Twyla Dell    Most Energized About Today: "I'm having lunch with my son who moved here from Burbank. For 20 years, I flew out to see him. From high school here, he went to the California Institute of the Arts to become an animator. That's the school Disney started to supply artists to the animation industry. And then he was there. He got married, had kids there. If I wanted to see a grandkid, I'd get on a plane. I don't have to do that anymore." - Twyla Dell   Parting Advice: "Take climate change seriously; it's going to be an increasing part of your life. It's going to encroach in ways you won't like unless you begin to do something independent of it. You can do nothing more impactful than to burn less gasoline or to stop it altogether." - Twyla Dell   Connect:  Website: https://www.howwecanstopclimatechangenow.com/mission LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/twyladell/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/dell_twyla Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TwylaDell.FuelingChange

Quantum Quote: “Be the change you want to see in the world,” Gandhi said. So whatever it is you don’t like, instead of complaining about it, do something about it. Live that change!”  - Chef Chris Galarza   Did you know that cooking with gas can produce unhealthy levels of carbon monoxide? At 200 parts per million, gas emissions can even far exceed the federal maximum of 9 parts per million.   While only 1% of chefs in America are currently cooking with an induction stove -  the top US restaurants are making the transition, and about 30% of the world’s chef’s have already moved to make our air cleaner, kitchens more productive and comfortable, and our lives more sustainable.    In one hour of cooking with gas, you can produce 38.9 pounds of food.In the same hour, an induction stove can cook 70.9 pounds of food.   Eco-friendly and energy-saving electric induction stoves are SAFER, CLEANER, more CONTROLLABLE, and FASTER than gas.    So what is stopping you from making the change?   Check out this week’s AWESome EarthKind Energy podcast, where we interview Chef Chris Galarza, the Founder and Culinary Sustainability Consultant of Forward Dining Solutions LLC.   Chef Chris Galarza is the Founder and Culinary Sustainability Consultant of Forward Dining Solutions LLC and is one of the country’s leading commercial kitchen electrification experts. When talking about sustainability, when talking about electrification and decarbonization, it has to start with the kitchen.   SuperNova #2. When I was running Chatham Eden Hall, the recorded indoor kitchen temperature did not exceed 72 degrees Fahrenheit, despite having temperatures outside that far exceeded 85 degrees. Even through production, we were cooler inside in the kitchen next to the ovens than we were outside with the fresh air.   SuperNova #3. Gas ranges at best are 50% efficient - which means that, if you have a 60,000 BTUs burner, 30,000 BTUs are literally getting burned and tossed into your kitchen, which isn't going into the pan, isn't going into the food - it's just wasting your money.   Worst Career Moment: “So the worst moment was when we were giving a tour of the campus and I was explaining how this all works. I had someone trying to help that was doing it all wrong, and then the power went out. And, I was like “everything was going wrong”. So I had to explain to them that, of course, if the power goes out, you can't cook. But also it's illegal to cook with anything, gas or electric, when the power's out.” - Chef Chris Galarza   Aha! Moment: “My background was working at five stars, five-diamond resorts all the way down to mom-and-pop restaurants, I never worked with electric cooking. It was all new to me, and we were creating it on the fly. For the last six years, that's all I've done. I had this Aha! moment in the middle of like construction, in the middle of creating this, that if this works out it can be life-changing.” - Chef Chris Galarza   Best Advice He’s Ever Received: “Get out of your head. Your worst enemy is the little voice in your head.” - Chef Chris Galarza   Personal Habit that Contributes to Success: “No matter what, even if I'm working from home, I always wear my chef's coat. It gives me the illusion that I'm at work instead of being at home with my Xbox is. So, always try to keep yourself professional, even when you're working from home. And be diligent.” - Chef Chris Galarza   Internet Resource: LinkedIn hashtags   Book Recommendation: What Einstein Told His Cooks: Kitchen Science Explained by Robert L. Wolke. The Flavor Bible by Karen A. Page & Andrew Dornenburg   Magic Wand: “It would be the destigmatization of electric cooking, Just eliminate all gas cooking and the stigma behind it.” - Chef Chris Galarza   WTF: “So I'll say my most fun one is a weird one. It was a hurricane right before Hurricane Katrina, I was living in Florida. Then another one that came through. It was my first hurricane ever. We were terrified. We're from New Jersey and have never lived through a hurricane. So we're barricading stuff, and then, we're ready to go. We have food. We have everything we need. Around three in the morning, we lose power, and everyone's asleep. My stepdad and I were listening to what's happening outside. And he and I are like, "We should open that door and check it out." So... we opened the door, and it flew open. There was stuff flying in the house. We were just- both of us, big dudes trying to shut this door, and we just laughed. My mom was livid with us because we had tree branches and water in the house. It was so awesome. And then after it was all done, we walked outside and for the first time and only time I've ever been in Florida, there was no humidity. It felt like a perfect fall day. I just enjoyed that day more than anything.”    Most Energized About Today: “One thing I'm most energized about is that people are actually taking this topic seriously. And there's a lot of people like yourself that are talking about it.” - Chef Chris Galarza   Parting Advice: “Never ever take a job that you're not afraid of. Always take a job that you think is outside your reach because that's what's gonna make you push yourself. That's just going to make you go in there every day and try to outwork everybody.” - Chef Chris Galarza   Connect:   Email: [email protected] LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chef-christopher-galarza-8a632742/ Website: https://forwarddiningsolutions.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/forwarddiningsolutionsllc/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DiningForward Podcast Website: https://sustainableoverloadpodcast.com/ Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sustainablepod/   Podcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/S_O_Podcast

But we also do things like LED bulbs, smart thermostats.   SuperNova #2.  A big startup challenge that a lot of businesses have is figuring out how to shift the business based on new consumer mentalities - especially the current pandemic. We had to shift from a very strong in-perso, office culture to being 100% remote, completely overnight.   SuperNova #3. We have a huge opportunity to help homeowners solve a key problem, while helping the planet. I think one of the most exciting things is that we're reaching people who wouldn't have done these improvements for the sake of the environment.    Topics Covered:   00:41 - Lauren shares who she is, where she is based and what kind of work she does   01:18 - She shares her favorite quote from Albert Einstein which is, “there are two ways to live your life. The top five reasons why people take action on purchasing some kind of consumer product isn't because they care about the environment. I think we've tapped into something really unique there. And that just makes me really excited about how big of an impact we'll have.” – Lauren Salz   Parting Advice: “People should feel free to follow their passions and find a way to make a career out of it.” – Lauren Salz   Connect:   Website: www.sealed.com;  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sealedhomes

Tracking State & Utility Clean Energy Policies - with Miriam Makhyoun, CEO of EQ Research
Quantum Quote: “Use the devil’s tools to win the angels’ war.” – Miriam Makhyoun Did you know that 19 states now have 100% clean electricity targets by 2050? But - did you also know that only a handful of them are legally binding? Across the U.S., state governments and utility regulatory authorities are creating policies and programs to move our society to clean energy.  Which states have the best programs? What are the laws, regulations, and programs in your state? How many of the goals are concrete and enforceable?  And – how can we be kept informed about proposed new laws and regulations so that we can speak up and add our voices?   Listen to Miriam Makhyoun as she unravels the world of EQ Research and what they do in tracking the development of clean and renewable energy.   Miriam Makhyoun is the Chief Executive Officer of EQ Research. Miriam is responsible for providing strategic leadership in establishing long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies. WIth decades of utility and energy industry experience, she expertly helps clients in areas including energy storage valuation, energy procurement, capacity procurement, market design and carbon emissions compliance. Miriam holds a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Appropriate Technology (Renewable Energy) from Appalachian State University.   Miriam served as the Power Supply Contracts Manager at MCE, California’s first Community Choice Aggregation Program, and managed MCE’s 2018 Energy Storage Request for Offer process. She also managed portfolios for Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Company, procuring Resource Adequacy capacity and carbon compliance instruments. Before PG&E, Miriam provided customized research for members of Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA), and conducted market intelligence while at North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association (NCSEA).    Sign up for a free webclass to discover how easy is it to get ultra-efficient geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home – without the pain of emptying your savings account. Please help us understand how AWESomeEarthKind can help you achieve your clean energy goals – and you’ll automatically be entered into a Sweepstakes for a Free LED Light Fixture:   SEND YOUR FEEDBACK TODAY SuperNova #1. When I look at the environmental issues that we would see years and years ago, ever since I learned how thin the ozone layer was in elementary school, it seemed like things weren’t moving fast enough. Sometimes, you got to use money and make the money go to the solutions that you want to solve.    SuperNova #2. The states are leading the way in decarbonization. Utilities will only do what they are mandated to do. Public Utilities Commissions need to coordinate with other entities such as air resources boards in order to have the scientific backing to consistently measure and track carbon emission equivalent reductions.   SuperNova #3. If you want change, picking up the phone is the best way to do it.   Worst Career Moment: “I’ve learned that sometimes, you might question what an organization is doing, and I think bringing that to the attention of the people inside the organization first and really being honest with them is the best way. Sometimes I’ve been a little bit cowardly and gone to more outside sources in my issues, so I think, if you really want your organization to have high integrity, you really need to be brave and say something.” – Miriam Makhyoun   Aha! Moment: “Evaluating energy storage projects while at MCE, you had some people offering ancillary services, and some offering just RA, and some offering energy only. So, I learned that if I wanted to really compare all these great projects, you had to do an apples-to-apples comparison. So with my boss today, we developed this net RA approach, net capacity value approach.” – Miriam Makhyoun Best Advice She’s Ever Received: “Trust yourself.” – Miriam Makhyoun   Personal Habit that Contributes to Success: “Planning. I use the Google Calendar in everything that I want to accomplish. I have it all laid out for the entire week, and I’ll just drag things around as needed to be prioritized so I can see it visually.” – Miriam Makhyoun   Internet Resource: EQ Research    Book Recommendation: Join EQ Research’s Book Club called Revolutionary Power by messaging Miriam at @MiriamMakEnergy    Magic Wand: “I just want to have more charging stations, and I want them to be faster. Double DC.” – Miriam Makhyoun   WTF: “When I was working at MCE, there were some pretty dry gears and that was not good when it came to fires, as everyone knows. That extreme weather did create the conditions that were necessary for fires to spread, and we were managing the Napa County, and overnight, they lost 4% of their load. That has precipitated a lot more distributed micro grid solutions in Napa County.” – Miriam Makhyoun   Most Energized About Today: “This very day, I’m energized about some automation that we’re rolling out at EQ Research for clients to be able to have updates that are lived to their emails on legislation regulation assets being changed. I just want to make our clients happier and make the information more accessible.” – Miriam Makhyoun   Parting Advice: “Calling your legislators is better than sending an email.” – Miriam Makhyoun Connect: Email: [email protected] Twitter: @MiriamMakEnergy Website: https://eq-research.com
