Ep. 25 - Music, Medicine, & the Meaning of Disability (with Kristen Hovet) - Bruce, Kara, and guest Kristen Hovet discuss difficulties navigating medical care for autistic people, self-advocacy in medical settings and in general, what it means to be disabled, Kristen's podcast, and Frooty Loops.
GUEST BIO:
Kristen Hovet is a late-diagnosed autistic individual from Williston, North Dakota and currently based in Kelowna, British Columbia. About a year after her autism diagnosis, she started The Other Autism, which first began as a private Facebook group, then blog posts and articles, and finally a podcast by the same name, which she continues to write, produce, and host. The Other Autism podcast explores late autism diagnosis and the latest in autism research, and works to challenge myths and stereotypes about autism and autistic people. Kristen works as a full-time research communications specialist for BC Children's Hospital Research Institute and will soon have a Master of Health Studies degree, with a focus on health research and policy. She gives presentations and guest lectures about a variety of autism-related subjects. In her spare time, Kristen loves going to concerts, reading, travelling, and working out. Her favourite places she's lucky to have visited include Namibia, Japan, and the Galápagos Islands. She's recently started producing electronic music, which can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, and other music streaming platforms.
