In this month’s episode, we take a look at the upcoming holiday season and the importance of recognizing and celebrating the holidays of diverse cultures. Jonathan Freeman, Director of the Department of Spiritual Care and Wholeness, discusses the value of uplifting and respecting people of all backgrounds while finding what we share in common. He also reflects on the ways that dialogue can break down barriers as well as how honoring different holidays serves Cone Health’s mission to treat the whole person. 

This month’s episode centers on the work that is ongoing in terms of improving health care disparities, as well as encouraging more black men to enter the field of medicine. Dr. Dale Okorodudu discusses his documentary, Black Men in WhiteCoats, which aims to shine a light on this issue. Dr. Okorodudu shares his experience as a Black man in health care, as well as what his organization is doing to guide minority students. They have seen the impact mentorship has had on the career development, personal success and overall well-being of participants.

This month, Authentic Moments w/Kiva kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 through October 15) by hosting the leaders of UNIDOS. Topics that the group discussed ranged from the preferred terminology for people from Hispanic cultures to how to handle Cinco de Mayo to what needs to be done to ensure the Hispanic community has better access to health care. UNIDOS is a newly formed Inclusion Network Group that celebrates Hispanic culture and hopes to make an impact on the Cone Health community.

This month’s episode focuses the efforts of two of Cone Health’s Network Inclusion Groups: BAHNG, the first group formed, and LAUNCH, the most recent addition. Both are part of the effort to reach and serve all the diverse members of the Cone Health community. Leaders from both groups talk about their efforts and how to get involved. BAHNG—the Black & African American Healthcare Network Group—works to educate the community on health care disparities, particularly for African Americans. LAUNCH helps Cone Health employees build their work network and develop in their careers. 

In each installment of Authentic Moments w/Kiva, Kiva Elliott, vice president and chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer, Cone Health, has frank, no-holds-barred conversations about a range of issues surrounding diversity and inclusion. In this episode. the tables are turned and Kiva is asked to reflect on what Cone Health has accomplished in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion. She shares that DEI is a collective effort, requiring everyone to step out of their comfort zones to keep learning and growing. 

This month’s episode of Authentic Moments w/ Kiva centers on promoting inclusivity at Cone Health, particularly in the care given to members of the LGBTQ+ community. The subject matter experts share details about a letter they received from a member of the LGBTQ+ community about their birth experience. The positive feedback the letter offered highlighted the importance of being open to learning new things and understanding the way the would is changing, particularly in how people self-identify.
