This long weekend was specially created to match the beginning of the Tokyo Olympics, which was expected to be held in 2020. The Japanese government started the "Go to Travel" campaign this 4-day weekend to stimulate the economy because the pandemic of COVID-19 has worsened the Japanese economy, especially the food and tourist industry. This campaign provides financial support for travel expenses. For example, accommodation fees will be reduced to half the usual price. The campaign will continue after this weekend as well. However, the number of COVID-19 cases is increasing in Japan. On July 23rd, 981 new cases were reported, which is the largest number of new daily cases ever. Due to this large number of new cases in Tokyo, the government has excluded people living in Tokyo or for trips which go through Tokyo from this campaign. The Governor of Tokyo has asked citizens of Tokyo to "Jishuku" (or self-isolate) during this 4-day weekend. The meaning of "Jishuku" was  introduced in Living in Japan TV on YouTube, video Chapter 7.
