Currently, the justices on the court are elected to return periodically. The Republicans are attempting to change the Arizona constitution to eliminate this vote, in order to drive the AZ Supreme Court to the right even further, and to institutionalize its makeup forever. We discuss the upcoming referendum.Part 2:We speak with Antonia Aguilar Rosenthal, Senior researcher at the Revolving Door Project.We discuss the likelihood of Ken Paxton, currently the AG for Texas, being appointed to national office by Trump. We talk about the reasons (they get away with it), and how customers perceive this as general inflation, when in fact it is due to greed. Corporate profits are increasing. We also touch on what can be done to stop this behavior.Part 2:We talk with Larry Tye, author and journalist.We discuss his book: "Rising from the Rails", about how the Pullman porters were the precursors of the modern labor movement and civil rights movement. Part 1:We talk with John Wigand, Prof. of Architecture and Interior Design, Interim Dean, College of Creative Arts, Miami University.We discuss the trend of converting office and commercial space to living space, to increase the availability of housing. We discuss how this can be done, and how zoning codes would have to change. We also talk about the benefits to be gained: walkability, mixed-use, less pollution due to shorter commuting distances, etc. We also discuss what infrastructure would be needed to support this: schools, stores, transit, etc.Part 2:We talk with Mark Joseph Stern, who writes for Slate.com.We discuss the latest ruling by SCOTUS on the use of bump stocks. When there is only one use for these devices (killing as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time), the convoluted argument used by Clarence Thomas to justify making these legal seems bizarre. The main ruling has been about mifepristone, and the court's opinion seemed to affirm the FDA's opinion that the drug is safe to use, and can be continued to be used. However, There is a poison pill in this ruling.We also discussed the level of ethics on the Court. We discuss the campaign strategy that they are using: Listening to the voters.We discuss the 5th circuit judge, Kaszcmerick, who has been the 'shopped' judge for right-wing plaintiffs. We review the $6 billion dollars that have been spent by Gov. Abbott in Texas on "border operations", most of it among his friends.Part 2:We talk with Robert Hockett and Bill Curry.We discuss the economic measures that are being studied, and how these measures translate to voters. Macro measures do not have the same immediacy for voters as micro measures. There is a 'disposable income desert' among many voters, and people are using debt to get by. Our current political and economic systems are rigged by elites and corporate interests. We need to recognize the importance of rural citizens, and see how all parts of the US populace can work together.Part 2:We talk with Kalena Thomhave, a freelance journalist who writes on social policy.We discuss how credit card debt is marketed to US users, and how it keeps people in debt forever. Half of all Americans have revolving balances. Fees and interest are highly profitable to banks. Teacher pay is lowest in US."Climate change" has been deemed and unacceptable phrase in state documents and laws.Property insurance is a huge problem. Cost is high, or it is unobtainable.Part 2:We talk with Todd Doman, columnist at The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.Iowa is copying many Florida actions, by using the "Opportunity Solutions Project", which restricts voting rights, restricts eligibility for SNAP benefits, unemployment benefits. Part 1:We talk with Giles Bissonnette, the NH Director of the ACLU. We discuss the recent ruling by the US Court about the “Divisive Concepts” law enacted by the NH legislature. It was ruled as unconstitutional because of its vagueness. This is the first time in the US when such a law was overturned, although many states have created such laws. These have been designed to be ambiguous, although there are penalties. They have created a culture of fear among teachers and others. In this way, they are similar to the laws regarding abortion. We discuss the effect of such laws on disability outreach, and any kind of education. Part 2:We talk with John Nichols, of The Nation Magazine. We discuss the Project 2025 plan, and its implications for many government agencies and departments. The overall goal of this plan is to dismantle government, and weaken democracy. One example is the idea of demonstration elections. We discuss these in some detail, and how this will affect democratic institutions.
