The June 2024 podcast features Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Dr. Terry Brown who holds a position as the Medical City Healthcare Clinical and Dietetic Internship Program Director which is located in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Brown shares her passion for blenderized tube feeding and her desire to promote awareness and education on the use in clinical practice. She reviews the development of a survey tool that was administered to adult and pediatric RDNs associated with ASPEN. The results overwhelmingly supported RDN’s desire to support the use of blenderized tube feedings, but more education was desired. This video features Dr. Senthil Sankararaman, MD, FAAP, D-NBPNS, D-ABOM, an attending physician at the UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospitals and an associate professor of pediatrics at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Sankararaman's interest in nutrition developed throughout his medical training, which began in India, then continued in the UK, and finally in the US. He said his experience in the Nestlé Fellowship was a game-changer. Dr. Sankararaman provides insights into the history of cystic fibrosis (CF), its management, and advancements in treatment technology. He also discusses various training opportunities available for CF and other specialties. Currently, he collaborates with a research team as a bench scientist to conduct research on CF. Dr. Sankararaman highlights the annual ASPEN conference and its significance in demonstrating the evolution of the field each year. Member Spotlight: Robert Martindale, MD, PhD, FASPEN
This video features Dr. Robert Martindale, MD, PhD, FASPEN, Professor of Surgery in the Division of Gastrointestinal and General Surgery, and Medical Director of Hospital Nutrition Services at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Martindale describes his fascinating career path. While working in a lab at UCLA during the summers to earn money for forestry school, Dr. Martindale became interested in human physiology. After completing his undergraduate studies, he was invited back to UCLA to work in the nutrition department as a graduate student. Here, he earned his PhD in Nutrition. This interest in nutrition then led him to enter medical school, specializing in surgery, all while enrolled in the Army which allowed him to pay for medical school. Dr. Martindale discusses several nutrition-related topics, including specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), the use of prebiotics and probiotics, food and the microbiome, managing patients with fistulas, and the overall future of nutrition. He highlights that we have the data that nutrition impacts outcomes; we need to sell it to the public.
