In this first episode, we will take a closer look at our Solar Eclipse departure i 2021, as it promises to be a special one. On December 4, 2021, a Total Solar Eclipse will occur in the Scotia Sea around the South Orkney Islands, near the Antarctic Peninsula. To experience a total solar eclipse anywhere on earth is something truly spectacular. But to experience the Earth’s moon conceal our sun while heading towards Antarctica is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
We sat down with Dr. Nicholas Tothill, an astrophysicist and lecturer at the University of Western Sydney who spent several seasons at the South Pole, conducting research and running a radio telescope. We asked him about the challenges of doing astrophysics in such a remote location as Antarctica and what passengers can expect from our “Antarctic Solar Eclipse” voyage in December 2021.
