the best way to hear from the past
Good podcast, the Chinese immigration and WV mine are favs. This is history told in the actual voices. It flies over the charges of bias or interpretation because...it's the people speaking themselves about their lived experience. There's a wealth of history's stories here.

If you love American history, this is a MUST LISTEN!!
I am in absolute awe of this show. The creativity of using letters as a portal into history is truly original and shows how decisions from the top impact everyday people. The way history is brought to life in this podcast is truly masterful.

Hear From Unknown Historians
I believe we are all historians on some level - and that’s why this podcast is so interesting. The host grabs source material - letters, diaries and pamphlets - from the era and gives us a view of history through the “common” American. Yeah you’ve heard about suffrage, but what your average woman’s thoughts on the subject at the time? Enter American Epistles. The letters are fascinating and the host draws you in. Highly recommend. Great history podcast
Loved the WV mine wars episodes. So much new info I’d never heard, and many quotes directly from the people who lived through the wars. Can’t wait to listen to more.

Powerful sources, beautiful writing
One of my favorite history podcasts. Susan has such an incredible eye for sources and brings the listener into a moment in history with just the right amount of historical context. With its focus on ordinary lives, this is social history done right: thoughtful, accessible, and beautifully written. Highly recommended.

Excellent, warmly produced history
“Warm” is an odd word to describe a podcast, especially one that can deal with some heavy subject matter. But that’s what I get out of American Epistles: warmth. And the sense that I’m going to learn something which I always do (and which inspires me in my own podcast). Can’t recommend this podcast enough for not just African American history junkies, but history podcast fans in general. Truly good stuff.

Great Format, Well Done
A new podcast, this is already a favorite of many of us who have been at it for a while. The format is unique, the episodes are well researched, the story telling style is engaging and personable without being informal. The topics are vitaly important for american history but are less well known. all around, one of the best new podasts you can find.

Outstanding
In the American Epistles podcast, Susan Stevenson shows a side of American history that few of us ever study - the experiences of average, regular people...not political or military leaders. By reading from actual letters written by "regular Joes", Susan puts you on the ground level, helping you see history from the viewpoint of the people who never made it into history books but who nonetheless made history. I cannot recommend this outstanding podcast highly enough.

Right from the horses mouth
This series is great as it has letters from folks of the time period that is discussed. It’s amazing to hear the history word for word right from that time. It’s eye opening and refreshing, yet sad and disheartening. As a white male it’s great to learn things that the history books left out. Thank you.

Thrilling & eye-opening
WOW. I thought I knew a little something about American history, but this podcast is already proving me wrong in the best sort of way. AE's compelling, NPR-style episodes feature letters written by "every day" Americans throughout our nation's past, bringing major events and time periods to life. Now, thanks to American Epistles, whenever I think of Pearl Harbor I will always remember Sgt Ann Bruchard; when thinking of the Great Migration, I'll also remember the words of the unnamed Chicagoan. This is the perfect podcast for students, families, and above all, anybody (like me!) interested in a deeper, truer, more vibrant version of American history. I can't wait for January 5's launch!
