The pain is real, but so is the glory that awaits. In this verse-by-verse teaching through Romans 8:18–23, we consider how to face present suffering honestly while holding on to the sure hope of God’s promises. We look at five ways to deal with present pain, creation’s eager expectation for the revealing of the sons of God, and eight aspects of restoration during the Millennial Kingdom. We also consider the difference between godly hope and false hope, and the assurance that God hears His children’s groaning. Taught by Assistant Pastor Mac at Calvary Kaneohe Hawaii. Why does suffering occur, and what does it mean to suffer with Christ? In Part II of “Suffering into Glory,” we continue our line-by-line teaching through Romans and examine four additional reasons suffering occurs: satanic oppression and affliction, persecution because of active faith in Jesus, the revealing of God’s glory and our dependence upon His grace, and the testing of our faith that brings spiritual maturity. We also consider the difference between having faith and becoming spiritually mature, the importance of caring for those who are weak, and why obedience is foundational to suffering with Christ. The pain is real, and the tears are real… But suffering is not for nothing. Christ is the goal, His grace sustains us, and glory awaits. “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” — Romans 8:18. Suffering is real, and there is not one of us who has not been impacted by it. But as believers in Jesus Christ, we have an eternal hope that reaches beyond the temporary pains of this life. Continuing from “Heirs with Christ,” this teaching returns to Romans 8:16–17 to consider the Spirit’s witness that we are children of God and what it means to suffer with Christ. We begin examining why suffering occurs: life in a fallen world, our own sin and foolish decisions, the sins of others, and the loving correction of the Lord. Along the way, we look at the wisdom of Proverbs for preventing unnecessary suffering, our responsibility to pray and live faithfully within society, and the treatment of the Jewish people in light of the judgment of the nations in Matthew 25. God has not left us to ourselves. His wisdom, mercy, and correction call us to draw near to Him, respond to the Holy Spirit, and keep Christ Himself as our goal. This first part prepares the way for the continuation, where the foundational aspect of suffering with Christ and the glory to come will be explored further. What does it mean to be heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ? In this line-by-line teaching through Romans 8:14–17, we explore the Spirit of adoption, the Holy Spirit's witness that we are children of God, and the distinction between entering the kingdom through faith and inheriting the kingdom through faithful living. Through the parable of the prodigal son and passages in Ephesians, Galatians, 1 Corinthians, and Colossians, we consider the seriousness of spiritual maturity, obedience, suffering with Christ, and eternal rewards. Our motivation is Christ Himself, as we yield to the Holy Spirit and seek to live for the glory of God. Taught by Assistant Pastor Mac at Calvary Kaneohe Hawaii. What does it mean to receive the Spirit of adoption, and how does being led by the Holy Spirit identify us as sons of God? In this teaching from Romans 8:12–15, we continue examining the believer's spiritual walk and the significance of our relationship with God through the indwelling Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul reminds us that we are no longer debtors to the flesh, but that we are called to put to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit. We examine five biblical practices that help us cooperate with the Holy Spirit in this ongoing process: preemptively protecting our senses, fasting, absolute separation, mortifying fleshly deeds, and saturating our minds with the word of God. We also explore what it means to be led by the Spirit of God, the connection between spiritual maturity and sonship, and why the word of God must remain the foundation for spiritual discernment. Finally, we examine the significance of the Spirit of adoption and the intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father that enables us to cry out, "Abba, Father." In Part II of The Empowered Spiritual Walk, we continue our line-by-line study through Romans 8 and examine the contrast between the carnal mind and the spiritually minded life. Romans 8 teaches us that being carnally minded leads to death, while being spiritually minded produces life and peace. As believers, we have been given the Holy Spirit, but we are still called to deliberately resist the flesh, recognize the progression of temptation, trust the Lord, remain grounded in His word, and yield ourselves to the Spirit. We also look at what it means to have the Spirit of Christ dwelling within us, the assurance that comes from being sealed by the Holy Spirit, and several practical markers that can help us recognize the Spirit’s renewing work in our lives. And ultimately, Romans 8:11 points us back to an amazing reality: the same Spirit who raised Jesus Christ from the dead dwells within every believer. The question becomes: How do we maximize the power of the Holy Spirit within us? The answer is Christ. Taught by Assistant Pastor Mac at Calvary Kaneohe Hawaii.
