How do we move from measuring student compliance to measuring true potential? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Miri Firth, Senior Lecturer and Academic Lead for Assessment at the University of Manchester, to discuss the structures of traditional Higher Education assessment. Recorded following the UUK – APP Conference 2025 that we both presented at, this conversation dives deep into why "flexible assessment" is no longer just a trend, but a necessary transition for a diverse and modern student body.Dr. Firth argues that when we give students agency over how they are assessed, we don't just improve accessibility for neurodivergent and disadvantaged learners; we foster the professional identity and decision-making skills required for the 21st-century workplace.Whether you are an academic looking for "small wins" in module design, a senior leader shaping institutional strategy, or a policy-maker focused on access and participation (APP), this episode offers a roadmap for making Higher Education more equitable through the power of assessment.Resources Mentioned:Framework for Flexible Assessment: https://www.qaa.ac.uk/docs/qaa/members/framework-for-flexible-assessment-(5).pdf?sfvrsn=cc3da981_2 Connect with Dr. Miri Firth:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mirifirth/🎙️ Join the ConversationIf today’s talk on assessment and equity sparked a thought, don't keep it to yourself. On Friday 4th October 2024, the akhi&saltfish Digital Network hosted perhaps our most important conversation yet, a Sickle Cell Community Roundtable discussing the experiences, challenges, and successes of those living with or dedicating their lives to supporting Sickle Cell Warriors.
Our conversation is authentically steered by the participants of the roundtable who dive deep into their experiences, sharing their toughest battles, inspirational successes and unwavering resilience.
Expect to hear:
Expert medical insights into what Sickle Cell is and community insights into what advocacy has looked like over the past 50 years.
The experiences of parents of children with Sickle Cell, the importance of awareness and ensuring your child is empowered when navigating their healthcare.
Why educators and institutions need to do more to understand and advocate for Sickle Cell Warriors.
A legal lens on Sickle Cell and the responsibility of organisations to do more.
Recent developments in care and what we can do moving forward to get even better.
Plus much more!
A huge thanks goes out to our roundtable contributors, we couldn’t have done it without you!

This is a very special episode from the akhi&saltfish Digital Network, where we supported Dr Marcella Daye by covering the action at her Step Together Ladies' Celebration Brunch, which marked the culmination of her latest participatory action research on health inequalities.
The setting for the day was the beautiful Delapré Abbey, and we extend our thanks to them for hosting us in their library.
Our live podcast from the event features a friend of the Network, Catherine Joy White, and her amazing sister, who were part of the brunch. They discuss the importance of movement in their lives and why women, walking, and wellbeing are such vital topics that need to be explored.
We also had the pleasure of meeting Rachel McGrath, CEO of Northamptonshire Community Foundation, a grant-making and philanthropic charity. Rachel, a keen runner, shares with us why documenting her history outdoors is so important.
We were fortunate to be joined by participants in the research, including Dorcus Francis, who shared a special poem with us, and Natasha Martines, who sang a song, demonstrating the connection between women, walking, creativity, and the community-fostered Step Together project.
Professor Corinne Fowler also joined us to discuss her expertise in colonial history, decolonisation, and the British countryside’s relationship with Empire. Listen in to learn more about her most recent book, Our Island Stories: Country Walks Through Colonial Britain.
Finally, we caught up with Dr Marcella Daye to capture her reflections on the brunch, why she chose to collaborate with the community, and her hopes for the future of Step Together. It was a fantastic day, and we thank Dr Daye for the opportunity to cover the event.

This week, we had to ask Farhana our seven signature questions so enjoy this BONUS EPISODE where explore why her husband is so lucky, her relationship with Sam Fender and why always eating the cake is central to her approach to life.

If you've followed the show before, you'll know we love a good conversation about names as it brings a lot of unspoken experiences to the forefront and makes you question your own actions and experiences. Revisit Episode #28 of BOFD to listen back to our conversation with Jane Pilcher now: https://youtu.be/S7d_KFeMjnI
Today, we're joined by the amazing PhD student Farhana Williamson who talks about her early experiences with her name, originally hoping for people to call her Hanna, to then understanding the "happy" meaning beind her name and embracing it. Farhana then entered the world of academia and was constantly renamed which led her finding support in the form of her supervisor, Candy Rowe, who helped her in writing this eye opening article on the impact of misnaming people in research and how we can stop it: https://wonkhe.com/blogs/the-impact-of-misnaming-people-in-research-and-how-we-can-stop-it/.
With Farhana's PhD coming to an end, it was a great chat which reflected on her journey and where she hopes to go next.

2023 was a crazy year in Combat Sports and my wish for 2024 is to make it bigger and better. Here’s how ⬇️:
1. Better information, advice and guidance for fighters on brain damage. Tris Dixon's book, Damage is a really impactful read that speaks of the untold damage happening to fighters in the training room, on the road and in the ring and with Floyd Mayweather Sr recently being diagnosed with dementia, fighters need to know the risks and early🙏🏽
2. More accountable judges and commissions. Let's face it - combat sports needs regulating. But it needs regulating to a high standard. Some judges and commissions fall short of that regularly and we never hear what actually happens after...more accountability please.
3. Open scoring. Much like point 2 - in no other sport do you not know the result until the end with no insight along the way. Open scoring will help weed out the incompetent judges and let fighters take their destiny into their own hands.
4. Support for ex-fighters. They give their all to us for our entertainment. Their aftercare is important too - that's why we support Ringside Charitable Trust and encourage you to do the same: https://www.theringsidecharitabletrust.com/how-to-donate
5. DAZN, Prime, Sky, TNT, and FITE TV are just some of the places you can watch fights...what happened to the terrestrial days. More mainstream showcases is a must to continue to grow the spectacle we love!
What do you want to see more of in Combat Sports this year? Let me know in the comments!

2023 was a crazy year in MMA and my wish for 2024 is to make it bigger and better. Here’s how ⬇️:
Less champ champ fights. We’ve seen it. We know the Conor McGregor story we know the DC story. We love the Volk attempts but let’s see more champions clean out their divisions with at least 5 defences before we entertain this champ champ talk, please 🙏🏽
Better fighter pay. There is a whole lawsuit going on right now surrounding the UFC and fighter pay. Yes, baseline pay in the UFC is better than in most boxing promotions. But, sport for sport - the overall revenue share is far short of where it should be.
Group post fight press conferences. UFC 199. Rockhold v Bisping 2. That’s the last time we saw group post-fight press conferences. It was carnage! That’s why I want to see it again.
Cross promotional fights. Last night we saw Bellator v PFL and it was an interesting card with purpose. We need the sport to be more collegiate to find out who really is the best. That brings me onto…
Jones v Ngannou. The fight the fans want to see. The GOAT v the Lineal Champ. Probably a pipe dream but that doesn’t stop me asking for it.
What do you want to see more of in MMA this year? Let me know in the comments!
