Desire: The strong pull toward something we believe will satisfy us. What do I do when what I want right now competes with what I want most? Genesis 25:27-34 (The Voice)  //  When the boys grew up, they could not have been more different. Esau became a skillful hunter and preferred to be outdoors. Jacob, on the other hand, grew up to be a contemplative man, content to stay at home. Esau was Isaac’s favorite because he was fond of good meat, but Jacob was Rebekah’s favorite. One day, while Jacob was cooking a stew for dinner, Esau came in from the field. He was tired and hungry. Esau (to Jacob): Please let me have some of that red stew you have there. I’m famished! (That’s why he was nicknamed Edom, which means “red.”) Jacob sees Esau’s weakness and decides to take advantage of the situation. Jacob: First, you have to sell me your birthright. Esau: Look! I am about to die of starvation! What good is my birthright to me if I am dead? Jacob: Swear to me first! And so Esau swore to Jacob and handed over his rights as the firstborn son. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew. Esau ate and drank. When he was satisfied, Esau went his way as if nothing had happened. Esau treated his valuable birthright contemptuously. The bowl= what I want now. The birthright = what I want most. Desire gets loud Be careful when "I want it" starts sounding like "I need it." Depletion gives desire a megaphone. Desire distorts value. Desire doesn’t change what’s valuable. It changes what feels valuable. Desire ignores the price tag Don't trade what you want most for what you want now What is this desire actually costing me? Matthew 4:2-4 (NIV) After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Esau submitted his future to his appetite. Jesus submitted His appetite to His Father. Desire makes a terrible master. Choose the ultimate over the immediate What do I want right now? What do I want most? Which choice moves me toward what I want most? You can want the bowl without bowing to the bowl.

How do I know God’s will for my life? I feel stuck in a major life decision. I don’t know what to do next. If you get to know God’s heart, you’ll get to know His will. God’s Sovereign Will God’s Revealed Will God’s Permissive Will God’s Personal Will God’s Sovereign Will: God’s unstoppable, unchangeable plan that directs all things toward His purpose Isaiah 46:10 NLT  //  Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass ... Proverbs 19:21  //  Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails. God’s Revealed Will: timeless truths revealed in His Word for how we live 1 Thessalonians 4:3 NLT  //  God’s will is for you to be holy… Hagios: set apart, different, sacred, dedicated to God You can’t walk in God’s will if you’re disobeying His Word. God’s Permissive Will: the freedom God gives us to make choices, even when they’re not perfect 1 Corinthians 10:23 NLT  //  You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial. God’s Personal Will: God’s unique, specific calling for you Ephesians 2:10  //  For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. We are saved FROM and FOR Psalm 32:8  //  I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. We overcomplicate God’s will and underestimate God’s goodness. How do we discover God’s personal will? Affinity: What breaks your heart? Ability: What has God made you naturally good at, or what have others affirmed as your strengths? Opportunity: What doors have already been opened for you, and where is the greatest need that you can help address? We trust God’s sovereign will. We obey God’s revealed will. We accept God’s permissive will. We walk in God’s personal will.

Weird Theological Practical Cruise Ship or Battleship Sleepwalking Spiritual Warfare  Ephesians 6:10-17  //  Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. What do I do with my shame? How can I forgive what I can’t forget? How do I move past my past? “That would’ve ruined my life forever!” Genesis 2:25  //  Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. You can only be loved to the extent you are known. Shame never comes from God. Guilt & Shame Guilt says, I deserve to be PUNISHED. Shame says, I am WORTHLESS. Guilt says I DID bad. Shame says I AM bad. Which of these feelings do you seek to avoid the most? Shame - 38% Guilt - 31% Fear - 30% Which of these desires is strongest in your life? Personal Freedom - 40% To Overcome - 28% Respect - 31% Genesis 3:1-13  //  Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. Where are you? Who told you that you were naked? Shame Based Thinking: We are vulnerable to PERFECTIONISM. We are CRITICAL of ourselves, making us CRITICAL of others. We use self-defeating THOUGHTS as a form of protection and escape. Isaiah 54:4 NLT  //  “Fear not; you will no longer live in shame. Don’t be afraid; there is no more disgrace for you. You will no longer remember the shame of your youth…” The only way to heal from shame is to move the FOCUS from what I’m not to who Jesus is. 1 John 1:9  //  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. I am not ________________. Because of Christ I am ________________.

Mark 5:24-29  //  A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. Nothing will test your faith like nothing Mark 5:21-24; 35-43  //  When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24So Jesus went with him. Jesus doesn’t just want your healing, He wants your wholeness Facts about healing: No healing is too big for God No healing is too small for God Keep Knocking Healing depends on God, not us When He doesn’t heal, He sustains 2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV  //  But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

Mental wellness isn’t about perfect balance; it’s about being prepared when life knocks you off balance James 1:2-4 // Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. God doesn’t waste pain, He uses it to form something in you that comfort never could. James 1:5-8 // If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. You don’t need the whole plan—just God’s wisdom for the next move Your safety net God’s presence & promises Psalm 119:105,130 // Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. Church & relationships Proverbs 15:22 // Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. Healthy Habits Professional Help James 1:12 // Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. Endurance now leads to reward later You’re not failing—God is forming you.

How do we live free? Galatians 6:1-6  //  Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor. Participate in a community of believers Freedom is accessed by Jesus and sustained through community. Restoring each other gently Carrying one another's burdens Carrying your own load Sharing all good things with your teachers Am I asking my church to do work I’m not willing to contribute to? Galatians 6:7-10  //  Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Invest in who you’re becoming The eulogy practice Galatians 6:11-18  //  See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand! Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh. May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God. From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.
